Lance_S
Hey guys,I have been a manual guy my whole life but have recently thought about doing auto conversion with a triptonic type shiftable transmission. So I need a tranny that is solonoid shiftable that can handle 500 to 600 hp. I have looked into the Toyota trannies but don't tknow of there are any other options. Anyone with auto experience please chime in. I want to do a paddle setup. Thanks.
viper1355
I know TCI makes a 6 speed unit based on the 4L80E. It's set up to run with their EZ-TCU unit, so the whole set-up is a little salty. But it's designed for paddle shift and it'll handle 850 hp according to TCI. I know you can get it without a bellhousing too. EDIT: Just checked, retail on the package (Trans, TCU, paddle shifter, harness) is about $6500. I'm sure it can be had for less than that, but it's a lot of money either way. Flip side is their TCU unit is apparently compatible with most GM transmissions, so if you can find a 4L60E or something that'll handle the power, you can use the EZ-TCU to turn it into a paddle shift. The Rabbit1
4l80E, comes in the new gm's with a paddle shift option, gonna need deep pockets to make it hold that much power though.
Lance_S
Been checking around. Looks like the corvette is going to give me the answer. The six speed that was used with their triptonic system which came out of the 2007-current will work. There is one on fleabay right now for under a grand. I am not ready to do this project yet but it's good to know there is stuff out there that will work. Since it's out of a vette, it should handle the power I want to throw at it. You do know the corvette has a rear transaxle, that might get quite expensive.
Lance_S
yeah, there is a transaxle on ebay for 500 right now. This project is a ways off, Just doing some research. But a shiftable 6speed tranny with the transaxle can be had for 1500 to $2000.00 It's a lot of money but I guess compared to what is available it's not bad. The problem would be to try and figure out how to mount it in the quest, or if it would even fit.
The Rabbit1
the corvette trans is not a super transmission, I wouldn't trust it past 500hp/tq reliably. while you have it out I would spend the money to change the clutches, put in a shift kit and fix any updates that have been released on it. But then again, I would be doing it myself so this might not be beneficial to you. I can't say for certain, but I believe the transaxle mounts to the rear of the trans somewhat like a transfer case, if so then you just need a tailpiece and you would be golden. or get a trans from a 2wd truck and change the servos, wiring, solenoids, and TCM to the corvette type. very feasible I think. Spooled_Starion
A local starquest guy has a automatic corvette tranny in his 86. I don't know how he managed to wedge that beast in there but it works. Good luck
