Sirius Dash MPI with a G64

Alright, we all know the JDM EDM and Australian market got the 2.0 4G63 SOHC Sirius Dash motor. The Sirius engine capacity was 2.0 L with the Sirius 4G63 2.0 L engine, subsequently featured in DOHC form in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution series of automobiles. However, American customers received the larger Astron G54B 2.6 L engine, but without any additional horsepower. Neither engines were DOHC. After 1987, European Starion models were also fitted with the 2.6 L engine, as was the GSR-VR for Japan. Both engines featured computer controlled fuel injection and turbocharging.

 

Basically any form of 4G6[X] is in the Sirius family. Mighty Max's from certain years 1990–1993 2.4 L 4G64 I4, 116 hp share the same basic lay out as the Sirius Dash motor and have ECI Multi to begin with. The older Starions such as the EX and 2000GSR had the 2.0 4G63 SOHC. The cylinder heads of both SOHC 4G64 and 4G63 are a bolt on affair also, Coming to the point

 

If you use a 2.4 4G64 wide block, Sirius Dash oil pump, Sirius dash cylinder head (stellite exhaust valves and Cam specified for turbo) , OE MPI manifold, Turbo manifold from the 4G63 Sirius Dash motor, Stock ECI Multi ECU from the Mighty Max, appropriately sized injectors and Fuel pump(of course you would lower the compression from 10.0:1)

 

You would basically have a 2.4 version of the Sirius Dash motor. Although it will be slightly smaller than the 2.6, it is an alternative that bolts right up, faces the right way, already Multi-port injected and has less head aches with cooling and ancilliaries. But as any motor swap, it will take some time to tune and get it all straightend out. I'm sure we can get certain parts from out brothers and sisters from AUSTARION.com :)

 

I'd like to hear people's opinions. Like I said, this is just a concept and not a full blown swap just yet. Who knows maybe someone has already done this ^_^

Finding a Dash head will be very difficult in any situation, here in the states, or down under.

 

You will have far better results with a 4g64 block and a twin cam head.

 

Unless you are doing it for the appeal of the DASH.

I don't believe the 2.4 MPI manifold will bolt up to a DASH head, a custom manifold will have to be made for MPI. Also, using the 2.4 N/A ecu in a boosted application is not the way to go, there is a much greater potential (SUPER POTENTIAL perhaps) with an aftermarket ECU. You will need an aftermarket controller or an ECU that can control the DASH head as well.

The sohc dash 4g63 head actually flows less cfm than the sohc 4g64 not to mention the combustion chamber being shaped a little different as well . It would be much better to use the whole 4g64 longblock with custom pistons ...unless somehow you could get the off the self 4g64 Twincam set to work ....I have also been thinking about this for a while now I have the dash turbo manifold and compressor ...have already fitted it to my sohc 4g64 mightymax and fits great ... I plan on getting a xtra set of g54b arp studs and use those on the 64 with customs cut spacers seeing as they are a little to long to use ... will get some pics up wensday of the manifold and other stuff

the Dash head is the same head that is used in the Mighty Max 4g64 SOHC. It just doesn't have the Cam and exhaust valves for the application

 

 

as someone who has done pretty much what you're planning, let me straighten a few things out:

 

the DASH head is a 12 valve head, the 4G64 and 4G63 sohc heads are 8 valve, and are a completely different casting, with NO MPI manifold available for the DASH 12V head (has 2 intake ports/valves, one exhaust as per normal), also no starions were ever sold in aus with anything other than an 8 valve 4G63.

 

forget about the 12V dash head!

 

what you need to do is this:

 

get a 6 bolt Gen 1 4G64 (ie pre 93) sohc with MPI from a US mighty max, get the distributor and mpi manifold with it, and ditch the factory loom and ecu. run something like a haltech, ems or other suitable "standalone" ecu, these have inbuilt map sensors reading to 22psi or thereabouts.

 

rebuild the motor using forgies if u want, the dohc ones have dishes though, you want flat or near flat for a 64 sohc head, unless u want to run MEGA BOOST! also an option is to fit oil squirters, the 6 bolt blocks (ONLY) have provisions for the oil squirters to be drilled and tapped.

 

acquire an aussie 8V starion exhaust manifold (i can help here, pm me if interested), and port it out to match the 4G64 head's huge ports, and port the turbo flange opening up to match the...

 

TD06-20G or if you're really silly a TD06-25G, these bolt on to a starion manifold using a TD05H type exhaust housing, with minor mods we all know here. the TD06 cartridge goes into a modded TD05H exh housing easily.

 

16 psi will give you 300hp at the wheels and be MEGA useable, heaps of power under the curve (20G - this i know for a fact).

 

TBH you probably dont even need forgies for 16psi if your tune is good. these engines run the pistons with the thin rings/thick lands, so they dont crack pistons easily like the 4G63 8 valve starion motor tends to when cylinder pressures get too high..

 

the car that particular engine is fitted to is an animal, it's awesome. and he hasnt even turned the wick up yet..

Well put.... the 4g63 8v sirus head is what I was actually comparing the 64 head to ....with the dash head you would also need a way to open the xtra 4 valves. With the intake manifolds which flows better the 4g64 van plenum or the us 4g64 mighty max. Also would it be worth the trouble to mod a sohc 8v 4g64 sonata intake manifold to fit a rwd application. So that it could be a front facing manifold....

one of the most impressive starions I can recall seeing on austarion, simply turbocharged the truck 2.4L sohc motor.

- Moded stock pistons to reduce the compression slightly (due to track use)

- Big plenum onto the stock intake manifold

- custom reground camshaft

- gt30 on custom header

- GM ecu/tuned

same thing I plan for my 4g64 sohc. Keep life simple

Stock/unopened 4g63's have made over 500awhp.

 

big turbo and injectors and a good tune is all you really need.

 

twin cam yes, but he's talking single cam.. the early ones had a shithouse piston design which was prone to cracking ring lands over 15psi no matter how good your tune is, that's the bane of the aussie starion owner, you either have to put forgies in or dohc type cast pistons to get the thin ring/thick land design..

So i have the 6 bolt 2.4 and what all quest parts would i need to swap over to get it bolted in and buttoned up?

Clutch parts?

assessary drive?

 

also if i wanted to put that 1g head on how much harder would it be?

 

And finally i can use the oil squirters right?But the engine would have to be completly dismanteled and i dont think im gonna do that just yet.

 

Bottom line is i have a couple good stock g54b engines but i would love to use that 4g64 just for the fact that its different and could run the dohc head.

 

How much power difference between the 8v mightymax head and a dohc? lets say a 16g turbo is on it
