Radiator fan wiring

first you should get the radiator checked Rodded out or recored.

or replaced with the aluminum one stickied in the Ebay for sale section.

make sure all gaskets are in good shape on the tbody intake.

make sure the fans are running strong flowing well.

have you checked the Tstat make sure it is in good shape.

there are 2 wires for the fan black and blue.

then either a red or yellow.

the red and yellow wires ground once the fan temp sensor

at bottom of the radiator reaches the on temp of the switch.

stock the passenger side grounds on at about 192 degrees.

the riverside is the secondary side fan. it kicks on at 212 degrees

stock on temp.

if you make a jumper wire from the red to the yellow and then to ground.

or some where on the chassis. it should turn on as the car starts and runs.

I suggest that you look at this link from the SOS Manuals, http://starquest.i-x.net/viewtopic.php?t=1067

Also look at FSM, Cooling System, page 7 - 8 for the factory OEM wiring schematic of the cooling system electrical circuit to help you figure where you're at and how you are going to rectify the situation that you have.

Ya I ditched the toggle switch. I wired the fans into the power wire of the passenger windshield wiper motor so now the fans come on with the ignition. Thanks for all the suggestions. I did notice my temp guage was going slightly above half and that is worrisome. But I haven't changed the coolant since I bought the car so hopefully a coolant flush and new fluids will solve this.

You should put a relay between your power source and the fans otherwise you may end up burning up the switch that controls the wiper motor or possibly the power wire to the wiper motor if it is not thick enough(heavy gauge wire) to handle the current draw from the fans.

I live in the Bay Area they are stock fans and the thermosensors are there and they look to be in decent condition but I don't know if they work. The fans turn on with the ignition that could burn out the wiper switch? The original wiring is jacked up somewhat the fans are all wired together to one wire so. Someone on the facebook page suggested I do it this way that's why I did it. Edited by T-Fath707

The quick easy way would be to just replace the switch.

You could repaire it to factory, assuming the wiring, relays, sensors all work, and if you only have to replace a sensor to get it to work, then its not too bad, but you may have to study chapter 8 a lot, and test each compnent and trace every wire. It may not be hard to fix, or it may take days, hard to say from here.

Another option is to replace the elelctric fans with a clutch fan and shroud. Its more reliable, and lightens the load on the electrical system quite a lot.

The way I have it wired now it works fine as far as I know. The fans turn on when I start the car and turn off when I turn the car off. I ripped the switch out and just wired it to the wiper power wire. Now if it's putting to much of a load on my electrical system I'm not quite sure but everything still seems to work the same so far. I'll probably just keep it like this until I see a reason for changing it. My question now is besides getting a different radiator or having the radiator rodded out what can I do to keep my quest cooler?? It's creeping very slightly over half on hot days sitting there idling any tips for keeping it cooler? Is It worth it to have the coolant flushed and refilled?

I don't know if the radiator needs servicing or not. It seems to work ok like I said it creeps to a little over halfway max. I don't know the condition of the t stat I'll probably replace it when I flush and refill the coolant. It's possible I have a cracked head or head gasket. I get a puff of smoke on cold start. So that may be why it's getting a lil hot. Car runs and drives great though so idk. What fans would you recommend to buy?

You probably don't know the answer to this question, seeing as though you just bought your Lady. A creeping up of coolant temp COULD be cause you are running old anti-freeze coolant or you have too great of a percentage of anti freeze to the DISTILLED water coolant solution.

Here's how you get the proper ratio of DISTILLED water to anti-freese in the coolant system:

" Completely drain the coolant system, including the engine block. I believe the agreed on correct ratio is 33% anti freeze to 67% DISTILLED water. Water has a much greater affinity to absorb/dissipate heat faster than Anti-Freeze. Better yet, take your LADY to a Jiffy Lube or similar shop that has a Engine Coolant flush Service System. It may be expensive (about $75.00) but I believe it's worth every penny. And specify that you want the above ratio of anti-freeze to DISTILLED WATER ratio to be replacing the unknown coolant that is being removed. In fact, I bring my own Distilled Water with me and make sure that they use it during the flush.

The Coolant System's capacity is 9.22 quarts.

If you are using straight anti-freeze, use 3 quarts of Anti-freeze to 6 + quarts of DISTILLED WATER.

If you are using a solution of 50% antifreeze and 50% water out of the antifreeze jug, add 1.5 quarts of DISTILLED WATER and then add approximately 7.5 quarts of the 50/50% anti-freeze solution.

A couple of Starquesters in the past, have stated that they could not understand why their Starquest started gradually running hotter after a year or so after topping off the coolant expansion tank with straight anti-freeze out of the jug. They dumped that anti-freeze solution and put in the above 33-67% solution and the coolant temperature went down to where it should be. This is because water has a much higher capacity to absorb heat and dissipate it than anti-freeze.

You MUST use distilled water to keep from introducing minerals, which are dissolved in tap water, into the cooling system. These minerals tend to plate the internal heat transfer surfaces of the radiator, which after time reduces its heat transfer capability. This is the main reason that so many radiators have to be rodded out or replaced after a couple of years of use.

Plus add just a couple of tablespoons of liquid dish soap into the radiator. This soap makes the coolant solution wetter which allows it to absorb and dissipate the heat of combustion better.

The above is an excerpt from this post, which every new owner of a Starquest should read. ;) http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=66449

Change your coolant per the above and then let us know at what temp shes running.
