Morning everyone,

Just thought id share the little progress I have made since I just started my JY project

Picked up an 88 (AUTO) roller with 84k for $500, and finally started tearing her down..

The goal is to go as quick as possible, for cheap as possible. And without too much Fabrication.

Bare necessities. And a sick tail streetcar/sleeper

It'll be a slow long build, but id like it done this year....

A close buddy of mine, and I just finished his JY4.8 Single Turbo GTO Build ourselves.. Made 787whp on 17lbs.. Hence my motivation..

Picking up a 4th gen 4.8 tomorrow for $500, plan on running a th400 trans, maybe an 8.8 swap, and a Borg Warner S475/S480? The Kicker: I think I can pull off a 9sec street car build with a budget of ~6k ;)

Need a few inputs from others if possible, Sorta doing the build blind. Which universal motor mounts have u LS swapped guys used? its not necessary to do the 240 R&P swap is it? Think its possible to fit a 400 in an auto trans tunnel? Possible the stock IRS can handle ~700hp+? Cheers. wish me luck

I was just in North Dakota driving a 4X4 with a 4.8, I know because the starter froze (-20 F temps) and I had to swap it out. Nice running motor, I see on the MSextra forums where guys are getting great power turboing them otherwise totally stock. Good luck!

thicker cylinder walls has nothing to do with how an engine responds to a modification

cool, that gets you the turbo.....because thats all you will need........;)

Have you considered a 4l80?

Are you going to repaint the car back to yellow?

I have considered the 4l80e, but im trying to do a budget build. I got a th400 for free so that's way im using it. I got a complete 5.3 for $500. most of the money is going into the fuel system, and converter.

And rod bolts I hope.......

Yeah, I hadnt put the whole moulla thing into thought when I brought up the 4l80. People tend to overlook the importance of a proper convertor on a regular basis. Good that you put in the thought.

I'll probably rattle can the bay nice n clean, and reprimer the exterior until the car is completed.. And yes, th400's are cheap and effective still. A good converter should run only 4-$500 max compared to the 4l80's 8-$900 converters. I can live without overdrive.. Engine wise, all it'll get is a set of LS9 Hg's, either ls9 cam, or customer grind, studs, and valve springs. 4thgen bottom ends are good for alotta of power. Any input on having to chop up the auto trans tunnel?? Rear end limits? Edited by soulja620

rearend will go 8's with DSS axles. Gonna need to iron out the IRS.

Prolly gonna need to cut the tunnel up. cam and convertor match is vital. Youll blow the convertor trying to build on the line if not. Are you gonna do a Tbrake?

Yeah, most people think you build a nasty motor and itll be quick. In reality, the engine isnt even a 3rd of it.

if it was so cold out I would go see if the th400 fits in my 5speed roller. I myself will most likely go with a custom Tick cam over the ls6,9. some had bein using stock cams and making power, but nothing like the spec'd cams. cam and converter are the biggest part. fuel is all over the board. a lot say just go 160lb injectors, which I might. but a lot of guys have made over 800 on 80lb injectors.

from what I have read higher mileage motors do better then low mileage due to the ring gap bein bigger. I got a 90k motor, but im working on getting a lq4 6.0 with 220k for cheap.

True dat, I guy over on the MSextra forums broke his 7th piston and was posting up to figure out why is tune was bad. They were mostly ring land failures, he was running too much boost for the stock gap and it was shearing the lands, not a tuning issue at all. The other part of that is on higher boost motors aftermarket piston guys (Wiseco, CP) ALWAYS preach 2 ring gap larger than the top ring which is opposite N/A gaps and even the stock Starquest.
