My 500 dollar or less MPI build!

Recommended Posts

Status : in progress

So I after all my questions that i'm sure you all know, only get the answers " wont work, dont do it " I decided I'm going to go regular old mpi like everyone else!

So my budget to do this is 500 dollars OR LESS! and I really think it is coming out as a good possibility!

So far my total spending :

MS 1 package : 150$

8x450cc Denso high imp injectors : 23$ ( ebay no reserve auction )

Manifold to be : 25$ ( junk yard )

tools and materials :

1 sheet metal alum : 20$

tools : 50$

@@@ 270$ so far

So After looking throughout the junk yard , I decided i'm going to base my mpi manifold off the upper manifold off of a Mazda protege , unkown year. i will be using the bottom of the stock manifold ( for bolting up ) and stock thermostat housing area.

I will be custom making everything myself and with help of free hands! since I'm in the army we have a auto shop on base with every auto tool and machine possible for free, mills, welders, block hones, deckers or what ever they are called ( to make the top of the block exactly flat ) ect.. ect.. plus technicians there for extra free help!

I will post pictures through my progress! also have some questions for you megasquirt guru's.

with megasquirt, can I completely eliminate that horrible looking MAF?

Do I need a TPS, or any of the stock ecu sensors at all?

I have my own rpm guage, oil press, coolant temp, boost so.

Can I still use the stock distributor for spark.

thanks for looking!

You can trash that MAF or sell it. You don't need it. You will need a TPS of some kind of course. The rest of the sensors get replaced by cheap easily available GM sensors. Probabably can be found in a junk yard as well. Just test resistance to make sure they are good. As for using the dizzy for spark, you need to talk to scott87star, he did my spark setup and works flawless.

Just to remind you, this car is not a DSM.

There is a fraction of the support from the after market.

There is no "cheap" way to do MPI

There is no "cheap" way to get tuned

and I'd really hate to see you give up on this car because it went "over budget".

The average dsm owner slaps on an Evo 3 16g, S-AFC, 650cc injectors and walbro 255 and runs 13's. My DSM had a GT35R, DSM link V2, 1200cc injectors, Weldon fuel pump, -8 AN fuel lines, Shearer Fab header, and Forrester Intake manifold. with 30+ psi I broke into 10.6's. over all $$$ spent was around $9k on top of the car. You'll be spending a lot more than $500 to go mpi. Just the Tuning time and Gas will rack up $500.

Do it once, do it right. Save your coin and you'll be more satisfied in the end.

Sorry if this post was depressing.

Welding to that stock intake it will warp. If you can bolt it to a large piece of some stock or a junkhead that will help but it will still need surfaced afterward because it will warp.

Were there any Nissans there or turbo mx6/probes?

Here's why I ask, there's an intake from a Nissan and nearly lines up and has no water provisions in it, its the two last pictures.

There's not much of the stock intake you can use unless you want the stat housing but you're going to find out that welding that metal isn't easy. When you heat it up all sorts of nasty crap comes out of it and contaminates your weld. Read about welding dirty used oily aluminum. I believe I read if you cook it in an oven first you can burn some of that away and it makes it easier to weld but it would be easier to just get a piece of aluminum and cut the holes in it and not have to mess with that dirty aluminum that's why they are made from scratch instead of a modified part.

There's already a few others that have used this intake and modded it to work. Its from the turbo ford probe/mazda mx6

There are both some Nissan motor, I don't remember which they came from but I think its the SR20

Well i dont see how tuning would cost 500+, i've tuned before, with a dsm haha but still, you can tune off a wideband alone, and took me half a tank on my dsm! so i'm shooting for 1 tank on the quest.

interesting, I saw both of those manifolds on cars at the yard. unfortunately it is a serious pain in the tail to get one off those bone stock cars.

also saw that exact same 2.2l intake on non turbo maxda mx3's in the yard. just said 2.2 injected. looks the exact same.

besides i'm only using the top half of the intake I chose, and well, you will see, Like I said it wont be pretty but i wont give up, and unfortunately Bag-O-Chips, I can't afford 500+ for an intake ALONE, i'm doing it myself, it's fun for me , good thing to keep me busy during this coming up freezing winter, and if I blow the car up well that's part of the experience, besides I have a brand new mazda so this really is my project.

thanks for the input though. and I seriously dont see how mpi is so damn expensive, 150-200 for ms, 100 for injectors, 50 for misc, wires, 150 for a wideband, and an intake. not everyone needs a super symmetrical ported flow tested blah blah blah intake! seriously the car came stock with a retarded looking intake that looks like they copied the exhaust manifold because they got lazy! so i'm sure i can't produce that much worse..

just wait ok.

i'll save my real coin for my mazda, and use junkyard scrap for this.

Your inexperience is going to cost you lots of coin anyway. In my opioning the cheapest way to go mpi would be to weld injector bungs into the bottoms of a stock manifold port the tb inlet for a 60mm dsm tb and run a dsm harness/ecu/ignition then tune with a safc or maft2

It cost me $2,000 for everything I needed to go MPI, I mean everything. And it could still be better. But I have one of those fancy super symmetrical ported flow tested blah blah blah intakes. But, I would like to see this happen. So dont give up on it. Edited by QuestFan

The best option for cost is going to be welding injector bungs to the stock manifold to match a fuel rail found in the junkyard.

Besides that, a search before asking questions would be helpful to your cause.

I am looking forward to the completion of your project... sorting out the intake is going to be the most difficult part, compared to figuring out a Megasquirt install (after you've searched of course, the information is here).

update : my manifold build is underway! today I took a grinder and got rid of alot of the extra junk on the intake I chose, no more single throttles or any of that crap. looks pretty good, unfortunately no pics yet =( I cant do the bungs on the stock intake because i'm going to be utilizing 8 injectors! Have you performed a search on using copper in automotive applications?

Copper catalyzes the aging of fuel. I would not use it. All major fuel system component manufacturers reccomend not to use it (and I know at least two specifically do not allow its use if you want to qualify for the warranty).

They Say" not to use pure copper lines in automotive applications because they can become brittle. Brittle leads to cracks, leads to leaks, leads to fires, which are considered A Bad Thing

I would suggest some blank fuel rail!
