To those who have successfully completed a T56 conversion: I truely honor you and I hope to do the same. Someday...

Same here!  I still need the kit to finish this!  Engine going back in soon.  If any of you have his kit, please contact me!  Any info, measurements, pics, etc. would save me a LOT of $$$ in fabrication costs to have this completed.

This should give you an idea of what needs to be done. Or leave you frustrated by my camera work! :)

Yes, it's in and ready to rock & roll.  Bumped this thread to go with the other T56 thread that had some info in need of clarifying.

I'll be able to verify the swap on the road once on the road w/ miles logged.  Likely within the week. :D

So I just read this whole thread......

What I learned....

The T56 will FIT our tunnel with NO cutting, only if you are mating it to a G54B

The T56 will NOT FIT and will require CUTTING, if you are installing a LS engine/T56 combo...

Am I right here?

Yes to this.  Need to bang a few areas with mallott for a bit of clearance, but no worries.  I can't speak to non G54B.  Several other types of T56s.

Which T56 did you use?  I've done 2 LS1 T56 swaps so far and both needed massive amounts of clearance, way more than hammering could have ever accomplished.  I'm wondering if the LT1 style sits farther forward or something.  Mine sits the F body shifter exactly where the stock shifter was, and has the output shaft exactly in the same plane as stock.  The T56 shifter housing/tailshaft housing shifter flange sits about 3/4 of an inch ABOVE the stock floor pan/shifter opening.  The bottom of the trans is almost perfectly level with the front suspension crossmember.

Yes, LT1.  Read from beginning of this thread for specifics.  Need adapter plate for bell, but shifter lines up perfectly...well, I had to flip the outer rubber boot in the plastic console surround and like the shorter 6" handle, but that's very nitty.

I really wanted to install a LS/t56 combo but having to do the cutting/welding on trans tunnel really throws a wrench in it.  It will cost ALOT to pay someone to fabricate everything...

Go with an LT1 6 speed then.  Will still need to fab up the adapter plate, slave mount (to flip for the LT1 pull-type clutch), and trans mount.  Also need to track down one of the LT1 Fidanza flywheels.  There was 1 or 2 floating around for sale last I heard.

I offered to get my stuff copied but got no serious response.  It's all back in the car now.

The LS-1 T-56 has a longer input shaft and can handle more torque (for other reasons). This would move the trans further back. Also, remember that there is a difference between fitting and being serviceable. One of the requirements I imposed on myself was being able to remove the transmission with the engine still in the engine bay. I don't know if this is possible with Chad's setup. Like I mentioned before, the engine most likely isn't the problem since I used the stock motor mounts. The wideblock 4g63 works with the factory transmission, indicating it has the same flywheel location relative to the stock engine (g54b).   As far as I'm aware, my flywheel is in the same plane as Chad's. With Jason's car, I believe the engine and trans sat lower than mine, it was custom motor mounts so it could have been further forward relative to mine, and he omitted the reverse lockout solenoid, which he later mentioned he regretted to me. Even still, he had to cut the tunnel to make the trans fit. It also ended up being a tighter fit than mine was. I ended up adding a "trap door" to the top of my tunnel so I could access the upper bolts holding the bell housing to the engine and the trans to the bell housing, even with a completely custom trans tunnel.
proof it did run at one point...

Just figured I'd add this info.

LSQuest88 says he runs a Tremec TKO500 5spd transmission with a LS1 engine, and it DID NOT require cutting the firewall or trans tunnel...

It does require some massaging or some hammering...but not cutting.....

Originally an auto or manual trans car?

He said it was a manual car....So that is good news for those who want to run a manual trans but without cutting the tunnel
