Will the non intercooled 87 axles fit the intercooled cars?

Mitsubishi lists the IC and non IC axles as different part numbers. So I would guess no they don't fit. But, parts stores have been known to mix up part #s in their catalogs. Order one and compare it to yours. The length is the same. The part to check is the diameter where it goes into the diff and the spline count.

I think the diff side will fit, but, the wheel hub side might not.I think the 4 bolt pattern was slightly different I/C to non I/C. Just pulling that out of my head, I could be wrong.

no. just no. there are 3 different axles. non-intercooler, intercooler and 6 bolt intercooler.

none are interchangeable...

all the part stores have or can get the non intercooled axles. dont be fooled by an idiot who works behind the counter and tells you it will fit. it wont.

there are some places on the internet that can rebuild yours if I remember I'll post a link.

I have a full 6 bolt rear that i just had 3.90 put in and having the axles rebuilt. Found and old mom and pop shop by me that can still get or has parts on hand to rebuild these. Very good family buisness and work is a+. Even went as far as painting my diff housing and axles with black epoxy paint.

Both advance auto and autozone list the 6 bolt axles for 88-89 cars. They can be ordered and take about a week to get. They are $171.00 and $40 core at autozone. Ill have to get the part number this afternoon. Also are duralast reman

I'd be very surprised if you can actually get those axles. I tried about 5 years ago. I paid for them and they told me they would be there in a few days. A week later I called them and was told they are not able to get them.

As far as IC vs non-IC axles I have also dealt with that. The difference is in the diameter of the bolt pattern for the hub. The non-ic cars have a very slightly smaller bolt pattern. It's real close, but it's not quite the same.

So maybe you can bolt them up. They likely aren't correct though.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as you don't have problems.

I tried to get axles from O'reileys for an 86 quest. Four bolt axles. The ones they sent looked correct but it turns out the bolt holes on the axles were a few mm off. I tried rotating them a bunch to make sure I wasnt being stupid but they would not work. My cars production date is 1/86.

Not sure if the axles sent were listed for a Flatty with non LSD diff as the parts guy couldnt tell me. I took em back and got CV boots and axle grease. Torn em down and repacked with no issues.
