Weeping 5 Speed Tranny Output Shaft Seal

Recommended Posts

Because of the miles that the Old Broad has on her the 5 speedy output shaft seal has worn a groove in it's mating surface on the drive shaft yoke which fits over the tranny output shaft. I'm tired of having to add gear lube to the tranny to make up for the gear lube weepage - not to mention the oily mess that it makes on the bottom of the chassis.

I was skulking around Rock Auto today and found this shaft sleeve which "should" supposedly eliminate this weeping problem.

My questions are:

1, Is this sleeve for the tranny input shaft or for the output shaft in the tail housing?

2. Has anyone used this sleeve to correct a tail shaft lube weepage problem? If so what were the results?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I don't have a yoke to measure up on, but the diameter looks too big for an input shaft. My thoughts though wonder if the slightly under an inch in length (if I'm reading it right) won't be enough to fit sealing area on the yoke. Might be better off to find a good yoke from somebody here.

That sleeve goes on the driveshaft yoke. It's a patch like repair similar to the sleeve for a crankshaft snout. It would be better to find a good used yoke to replace your worn one.

Jeff, I agree that it would be better to get another yoke. However, the drive shaft assembly, from the factory, came as a complete balanced assembly. I've match marked all of the assemby's pieces since the first time I replaced a u joint and reassembled the drive shaft according to the match marks. I've tried to maintain the balance as best as possible.

I'm leery about replacing any one of the drive shaft components ( with the exception of the u joints ) cuz the drive shaft would no longer balanced as it came from the factory and it may cause vibration. And I sure as hell don't want to pay for rebalancing the drive shaft assembly.

I think that I'm gonna order the sleeve, it ain't that much, and see what I get as far as what the fitment to the yoke collar OD is.

Mark, if the sleeve is FUBAR, I'll PM you about getting your drive shaft assembly.

Thanks for the input everyone.
