Calling All Louver Owners!

Recommended Posts

Monday was a VERY happy day! (Nice to have one once in a while ) A friend of mine on here graciously gave me a set of louvers. I won't say who for confidentiality purposes. But, there is the issue of the louvers needing a bit of work.

They are in GREAT shape overall! They're not all bent up or rusted through or hacked up or anything. However, I only got one of the top brackets that holds it. So I know how to construct the other side. But what exactly does the lower mount look like and how does it attach? These are the metal louvers mind you! I see there's a turn screw at the bottom on each side that sort of locks. Does anyone have a picture I can see of theirs so I know how to properly construct it?

Next, the plastic... rubber... whatever pieces that hold the sides together have become brittle and broken from sitting outside. They're the parts at the bottom of each side that would rest on the trim. These small plastic runners are broken. Would anyone know a good way of constructing something to hold them in a line again? I was thinking a stainless steel flat rod on the inner and outter side of the louvers and sandwiching each one by the use of two SS nuts and bolts and then some kind of weather stripping on the bottom to keep it from being noisy while going down the road. Any other ideas?

Ok, for starters, post some pics of the louvers, specifically the mounting points and parts in question. I have a set of the mitsu metal louvers and had the same issue with the top brackets on mine, so I made a stainless set. I know there are a few other styles of louvers with different variations of mounting. So,post up what youve got, so we know exactly who can or cant help you.

Alright. I'll post them up in about an hour. For now to get an idea, the top mounts are more like latches. They just kinda hook on the top of the hatch. The bottom is like a screw with a spring under the flange of the head. It's kind of like a twist-lock thing. Those are on each angled side on the bottom.

I ripped off everything on my rear louver and attached it with some incredibly strong double sided tape where the rotted rubber was. Holds just fine, Ive had them on for almost a month with no issues but if someone really wanted they could probably steal them.

I guess what Phil said was true...OEM is overrated

But, I'm trying to keep it as stock looking/built as possible. I have a riveter so I'll use that to assemble back together. But, I just need to know about the brackets. Which means I need to post the pics I said I would. OOPS! Be right back!

This is on the bottom louver. This is the outside placement...

This is the underside...

Here's a closeup of the outside. You can see it's a screw-like pin with a flathead head and under the head is a spring...

A closeup of the bottom. It looks to have a flat end that turns and locks it into position...

Another closeup of the bottom with the pin pressed in as if it were in the locked position in the bracket...

I know what the twist lock looks like. I have that part. I need to know what the bracket looks like that GOES with the lock.

In addition...does anyone know where I can find some more of the trim that runs down each side of the lovers along the edge? Mine is all cracked and broken and it needs to be replaced. I can't find any trim that matches or even comes CLOSE to that design I'll try to post pictures later for those who aren't sure what I'm talking about.

Interesting! Even the top bracket isn't the same to what I got with them. But mine were original O.o the bottom brackets look nice though and stable. I'm just not sure how I would refabricate them. For now I made a bottom set out of some metal that I bent to hook onto the side of the glass and put one of those slip-on faux screw hole thing-a-majigs. I forget the official name for them. I'll remember when I'm taking my theatre exam or something lol. But it's held on pretty well so far and doesn't rattle!

The style of fastener you (Rob) showed is called a dzus button fastener. Very commonly used on dirt cars and late model stock type race cars, (thats where I have experience with them anyways). About anything you need to re-fab those brackets can be found here. http://dzusbuttons.com/ Or jegs or sthe like.

So maybe its time to think about replacing all of the hardware. Im gonna bet that the holes in your louvers will fit the dzus buttons in the link I posted, so get some new buttons since yours are rusted crap anyways and get the associated springs and brackets. Then you will have all shiny new stuff holding your louvers on.

  • 3 weeks later...

They're not rusted NOW. Lol. I took the louvers apart and completely sand blasted that yellow peeling crappy paint off and repainted them. So they're fine now. I'm actually quite happy with the brackets I've made actually. Haven't had a problem yet! But there's one issue that I came across even on the ORIGINAL top brackets.

Even the original brackets seem too low. When I use the original design, the hatch hinges are too high and bend the louvers a bit making the line of the louvers wavy and preventing them from looking straight in one line. Are there covers on the hinges that can be removed to prevent this or what?
