took my column out, window welded the worn coupler, repaired boot, and put an additional spring on adjusting arm to prevent it from coming loose all the time

Much better fix then the zip ties I used on one of my former cars.  

But why force the column thru the grommet?  4 bolts and the grommet comes out with the column in one unit.
