Tell her I sold it to you, because you believed in flatty superiority.  As a non-believer she has to prove her worthiness by sending me another grand if she wants to take it away from you :)

was playing with buffing the drivers side a little yesterday while my son was playing in the back yard. nothing major just seeing how it would clean up, once i really go to town on it she is gonna look sweet.

just sitting for now waiting to gather all the parts for the 4 lug swap, pdodson sent me the hubs, meeting John (Indiana) today to get the front wheels, and ordered new front rotors from rock auto this morning. Monday it will get a new battery and all new fluids to get everything changed out and she should be ready to rock!

worked on a exhaust manifold today that i got from PDodson, this was going to be for the 87 but the #4 is leaking on the 84 so i need to pull it and replace the gasket. Going to use this on the 84 instead of the 87, did a little porting to eliminate the ring, stress relieved it, and ground the sharp edges of the casting.

i will port the turbo housing and wastegate port also when i pull everything apart. this still is classified as stock in my book, just making the exhaust flow better and porting the wastegate will just give it a little more power once its set psi is reached.

i know i should do that but not trying to spend any money right now, i did take my DA sander and some 80 grit and sanded it in an attempt to make sure the mounting surfaces were nice and flat.

and my lord i forgot how hard it is to replace a manifold while its on the car, i been working on it for about two hours now and all i have got done is getting most of the misc parts out of the way so i can get to it. i have one bolt still holding the turbo on and on holding the exhaust on, i dont want the turbo off just yet because i want to pull it over to my buddy's shop tonight so i can finish it up.

i am having a mother of a time getting the secondary air pipe off the pre-cat so i am gonna be squirting it all day with PB blaster to try to loosen up the rust. i also snapped my brake line wrench trying to get the oil line loose so thats soaking also. this is obviously the original manifold that has been on there for 32 years and the bolts are all nice and rusty. the bolts that hold on the manifold look like they are going to give me trouble judging by the amount of rust on them chances are half of them will walk the studs out of the head rather then the nut coming off.

if this was my 87 i would just pull the head so it would much easier to get to the manifold bolts but the 87 has everything deleted so i unplug a couple things and unhook the exhaust and off she comes. with the 84 having all the original parts i dont want to have to unhook all the stuff and create more problems.

its a pain in the bunghole to get the manifold off on the car but once i get it done it will all be worth it. the non-intercooled setup already has zero lag because of the short path it take over the valve cover and straight into the TB and i cant wait to see how she does with the turbo inlet and wastegate ported, should spool even faster and with the larger wastegate she should have a little more top end power.

forgot to mention...

it appears that the center cartridge of the turbo may have been replaced with a later model turbo at some point because it has coolant inlet and outlet holes in it but they dont have anything hooked up to them. there is no nipple on the thermostat housing nor is there a return nipple on the around the block pipe or water pump.

might track down the parts to actually run coolant through it but that can hold off until the car gets put up this winter. for now i just want the car on the road so we can drive and enjoy it before summer comes and goes.

lol.....you sure you can find them. its something i would do later down the road, right  now i am just fixing the exhaust manifold leak, appears to need a new valve cover gasket and i have one that keith gave me so got that covered.

here is where i am at right now.

you can see the secondary air bolt and where the nut was starting to get messed up trying to remove it so i just stopped. worst case i will just cut the pipe so i can get the round end of the wrench on it then track down a donor pipe, since everyone deletes this piece it shouldnt be hard to find one...lol. but then again not really a keeper part and i know i always just pitched mine so may be harder to find then i think.

Ummm, if you are using that "all original" signature tag line you need to photoshop the original wheels onto the front...  :D

Looks like you are making good progress on the car, if you are going to this much trouble to be "stock" have you thought of making the car a full on show car?  I think it looks good now, and the care and attention you are giving to it, it could look fantastic!

Talk to Indiana about the turbo, I think he may have said it was a warranty repair OEM replacement turbo after the original failed.  The non-water cooled ones really need special care to keep the bearings from coking up with burned oil from people shutting down the engine without a cool down period.

i got the donor manifold installed and ported the turbo inlet and wastegate hole and my lord what a difference in power it made. obviously nothing except the butt dyno telling me this but the car feels a lot more peppy and i can hear the whistle from the turbo now. i did also gut the pre-cat and i still could not get that stupid secondary air pipe loose on the car so i had to cut it so i could remove the car and then plugged the hole with the old quarter trick. all i need is to find a donor pipe to replace the one i cut and it can go back on, not a very complex setup and has only one vac line i had to plug for now. i got the power steering flushed and the reservoir painted, also painted the valve cover pipe and replaced the valve cover gasket while i had everything out of the way. i painted the heat shields with a coat of silver since they had surface rust on them so i used some high temp ceramic paint i had laying around.

keith all i can say about the turbo is i have NEVER had one feel as tight as this one, the bearings are flawless in this thing and there isnt a single ounce of play in it at all. no side to side play and no in and out play, feels like its a brand new turbo. i did just take it on a spirited drive and when i got back i let her sit for a few minutes and just idle before i shut it down. i am usually pretty good about warming the car up good and letting it cool down after i drive it even on a water cooled turbo. since the passages for the water coolant are there i may go ahead and install the parts needed for it to run coolant through the turbo and that would just be so the bearings dont get messed up.

i have all the parts on the way from rock auto to get the 4 lugs back on her and trust me the signature pic will be updated as soon as i get them on there. i did take more pics but photobucket is down right now so i will get them posted once they get their site sorted out.

as far as a show car....i dont know.....i would say over all the car is a 9 out of 10 and would probably make a decent show car but what fun is that...lol. not to mention i dont think i could get my wife to stop driving it

original exhaust manifold on bottom and new ported manifold on top. Happy to report that the original manifold has NO cracks in it and is in great shape.
Posted Image

ported turbo inlet to remove the step for the ring.
Posted Image

ported wastegate hole, i just took some silver paint and put it around the edge of the flap and closed it so it left a outline of the outer edge of the flap.

Mid way through the swap.
Posted Image

gutted pre-cat. it goes pretty quick when you have a air chizzle.
Posted Image

all back together.

Posted Image
Posted Image

before...
Posted Image

after...not much of a change but you can see i painted the valve cover pipe, PS reservoir, and heat shields around the turbo. and secondary air system removed for now because i had to cut that stupid pipe, just need to hunt down that pipe and it can be re-installed.
