Good evening guys! Validation came through a couple of days ago and I've been browsing the forum for a while looking at details of engine rebuilds and the like. Thought I'd introduce myself and my project :)

I live in England and had been looking for a Mitsi Galant GTO for years until one turned up a few hours away. Much more favourable than the import I was looking at from New Zealand.

Here's the car picked up and towed back a little over 18months ago.

The plan was simple. Restoration and an updated engine from a Starion. The starquest block is the next generation of the Astron block currently fitted to the Galant so I was hoping it would be a simple swap.

Old engine was pulled leaving plenty of space for a starquest engine I was yet to find.

Managed to source a 2.6l tubby engine from a friend who is replacing it for a turbo'd V8 Lexus and got it home to see how it all fitted.

Actually fits in really well but I had to drop the steering box out so the gearbox would clear. Plenty of room once it bolted up.

I had to shorten the extension housing of the gearbox as it was a good 4' too long and I didn't want to cut the tunnel. Was a nightmare to strip the extension housing off the gearbox but replacement parts from a Mitsubishi L200 (the pickup, I'm not sure what it is over the pond??)

Old and new selecter arm... quite a difference in length.

New housing is much shorter too.

Once it all got back together it gave me just enough clearance... :) Happy!

It's a case of plumbing it all in now. I don't think the starquest intercooler is going to find space infront of the radiator although I'm not sure I can find one that does fit nearly at the moment. Some research is needed! :)

I'm a little daunted by tracing all the vac pipes and electrics but I'm guessing a good 'one at a time' process should see me through to getting this started for the first time! Fuel swirl pot should be plumbed in tomorrow.

The deadline to get this running and back on the road is the end of August. One of my best friends sadly passed away a few weeks ago and we're having a memorial award for him at a car show. Once it's on the road, I'll slowly continue the restoration and look at improving the engine too!

Thanks for reading guys, if anyone wants to read about the whole project you can find it here on the Retro Rides forum

I look forward to getting to know everyone here and hopefully be able to advance the performance of this engine in the coming months.

Thanks B)

Chris!

Awesome! Looks like one of the cars at Pan Am Nationals, US vs Puerto Rico. They always hook up those old Toyotas, Datsuns, and Mazdas, some with swapped G54B but I don't think I've ever seen an old Mitsu like that before.

Thanks guys!!

Here's where it stands at the minute! Starion intercooler kinda mounted, need to trace the i/cooler hoses, then vac pipes, fuel line and the loom... I'm dreading the loom! Plenty in there to go wrong I fear.

Tried to label in my head most things on the loom

Fuel injection assembly I believe.

Haven't got a clue haha!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2196/5740927607_f5daae7ffd.jpg

I'm thinking sensors? Rad and fan temp sensors?

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2705/5741482438_15ddb69939.jpg

And then last end is obviously ECU.

Not sure where the connection off of the coil goes tho?

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3073/5741484884_5bb5e42046.jpg

And I'm embarrassed to say I have no idea what this is :/

But here's the money shot which has put a smile on my face for the last two days!!

New upgrade intercooler will be replacing that when its on the road but at the minute the priority is to get it back driving again! I have a car show in August that it NEEDS to be at.

Thanks again guys :)

Your first I haven't got a clue black box thing is the igniter/knock box. The little thing coming off the coil is is a noise Suppressor for the radio I believe. The white plug j think just goes to ground. And the last silver thingy I think is the resistor for the injector.

Heere is a link to the station manual. It.may help figure out the vscumme and wiring portion.

Good luck sir and keep us posted.

That's a really cool project! And yes that's fuel injector pigtails plus some other nearby stuff. The thing you are embarrassed to ask is injector resistors. Like he said grab the manual from starquest garage and everything will come together. It's really not that bad. Very much looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

Ever think of going multi-port? I have no idea if the Mitsu Magna was ever available on your side of the pond but using that intake manifold is the easy way to really get some nice performance out of it. If you are comfortable with tackling a wire harness and tuning that is ;)

Thank you very much for the help guys! I've downloaded the manual and had a flick through, hopefully I can start at the beginning and just start allocating wires and it'll come together!

I'm very much looking at multiport in the not too distant future as well as an engine rebuild, crank grind and maybe either a polished and ported head or a replacement (I seem to remember an EVO head benefitting the engine a lot)

At the moment it's very much a 'get on the road' project as there are a lot of people waiting to see the car which I find very flattering and also one of my best friends who inspired me to get the car in the first place sadly passed away a couple of months ago and we're having a memorial award in his memory at a coming car show and I NEED to get the car roadworthy for then. Mid August basically :) Once that is done, I can continue fiddling :)

I will keep you informed, you've already been very helpful as a forum. Thanks guys! (plus, I have an Aunt living in Boston, making US purchases MUCH more acceptable!!)

Chris :)

  • 3 weeks later...

Had a good weekend prepping and primering the car, few photos to show you.

A LOT of fun and the first time since I've owned the car that it has all been one colour! Very pleased.

Looking at the loom and fuel system now. Ran a hard fuel line under the car and linked up into the boot ready for a fuel swirl pot setup.

The loom is a little long tho. If I pop a hole in the passenger side and mount the ECU in that footwell, then I only need 12" to reach the injector assembly... that's about 4' of un-needed loom!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2655/5815963998_aec735cbdd.jpg

I'm thinking of unwrapping the loom, popping the wires out of the plugs, shortening and then reconnecting to the plugs. Not had a thorough look at how the wires push out but I'm hoping they're straight forward

One thing I DO need to ask, though, is regarding the air filter. There is nowhere near enough room to fit in the whole air box in the engine bay, so was hoping to swap to a simple K&N air filter. Friend kindly donated one, if it needs changing that's no problem but what do I do about the assembly inside the original air box?

Found a little in this post but still not 100% sure.

Thanks guys! Wiring loom will be tackled this weekend/next week and the fuel swirl pot setup tomorrow (weather permitting)

:D

In the Starion the loom went from the passenger ( car's right hand side ) out to the right front, across the radiator support bracket, around behind the battery in the car's left front corner and then over to the engine. That might explain why you have 4' of extra loom.

Perhaps you can mount the computer in the trunk! LOL

Most compact set up to do away with the airflow sensor is to get a MAF Translator and blow through a GM MAF.

But I'm also thinking that you might fit the air can directly off the compressor inlet, or pipe it way the heck away.

That should get you started, search MAFT for more.

The wiring mods are also well-documented in the 1G MAS FAQ.

Awesome project, BTW; love those Galants.

  • 2 months later...
  • 3 years later...

Good evening guys! Build is getting very VERY close now. I know it's been a while but you know what these projects are like ;) I had a year that I just had to write off as it just rained none stop over here in England.

I've been working on a lot of bits and pieces over the last few months, had the turbo rebuilt (there's time for an upgrade later!) and I adjusted the timing as it was 8 degrees out :o Not sure how that happened.

Hopefully this will work, here's the link to the latest engine running video I've popped up on my Facebook... https://www.facebook.com/chris.frosin/videos/vb.548905764/10153066408405765/?type=2&theater

I do, however, need you guys help as I'm stuck. The engine won't rev quickly. I can get it up to 4250 revs slowly, but I can't bury the throttle. It stalls and goes back to idle. If I then keep the throttle open it just stalls as if it's flooded out.

I've pulled the fuel filter out to see if it was restricting the flow, that didn't seem to help. I think I've adjusted the TPS correctly, but I'm now pretty stuck without just going out and buying replacement parts for everything..

Has anyone any ideas as to where I can focus some attention and track down this issue?

Many thanks!!! SO excited now, it's very very close to being on the road properly :D

Chris!

from the video, it almost sounds like either the timing is off or you have the injector clips on the wrong injectors. just my thoughts.

Thanks for the reply wrngwae (omg that's tough to type haha)

I've just popped out and switched the injectors. It woulnd't start in that configuration so I'm guessing they're the right way round :)

To me it completely sounds like a timing issue too. I'll double/triple/quadruple check the timing in a second but I'm sure I got it right. 10 degrees BTDC....?

New coil should be with me on tuesday so maybe that will make a difference.

There is something very simple hiding somewhere, i'm sure :)

Do you have one green and one black injector? Ifso just the black one

Should run it till around 3500rpm or so..

The secondary(green) injector can be unplugged,,just to diagnose the right injector is being used for the primary.

To me kinda sounds like the secondary injector isn't even working.

Should start if the injectors wires are switched.

Oh..... well that is interesting!!!! Some more digging to be done.

I've just run through and 100% completely spot on dogs bollox accurate done the TPS ISC and timing... it runs soooo close to perfect now.

I'm on a photoshoot tomorrow so I'll have a check and dig about on that secondary injector on tuesday :D

Thanks guys! Let me know if there's anything else you can think of. I'll get some pics up asap

Yep 10deg btdc. Confirm the cam is timed correct as well. Rotate the motor to tdc. And pull the valve cover. The dowel for the cam gear should be between 11 and 12 if it were hands on a clock.
