Got some more done today...started working on the support spines.  Pretty easy and straight-forward as far as the work goes...just takes a lot of time waiting for glue to cure.  I leave them clamped for about three hours to promote the best adhesion...so I cleaned the CBR in the between time lol.  I use 1X1 struts with clamps to make sure there's pressure all along the spines while curing.  Got three done today...will get the other three done tomorrow.

They're looking good...and they'll be better than the prototype by the time they're done.  Wish I was getting them done faster.  Going as fast as I can now that I only have one day off a week.

Got some more done today fellas.  Trimmed out all the edges to ensure some straight lines.  Also measured and pre-drilled the holes for the mounting dowels...then started laying down upholstery for those of you who ordered it.  Just laid down one side...I'll finish the upholstery returns as soon as the top sides have had four or so days for the adhesive to tack and set.  After upholstery is done, I'll be putting on the rear C-channel trim.  Once that's done, I'll be putting the mounting dowels on each of the units to set and adjust for best placement.  Anywho, we're making progress!  Here's some pics...sorry for the blemish on the lens.  You can see that by flipping the piano hinge to the bottom side, it eliminates the bumps that you saw in the prototype...a much cleaner look in my opinion.

They look damn good my friend, keep up the amazing work!

Is it the material or just the camera making it look like the covering is striped?

It's a combination of the two I think...the fabric does have a weave pattern to it.  I think it's the camera resolution makes it look like it has curved stripes.

Hi All,

Some good progress today.  Started assembling the mounting dowels today.  As I mentioned before, I got creative in order to save on cost for you guys.  Everything used to make the mounts can be found at your local Home Depot (should you guys need to replace something down the road).  I used some regular old zinc plated threaded rod for the dowels.  The threaded rod is a lot cheaper than smooth steel rod, and the threads actually serve a bonus purpose by promoting added "grab" to the retainers once installed.  The retainers are nothing more than electrical conduit mounting loops with teflon sheaths.

Holding everything to the cover is a standard hex-head 1/4 X 3/4 screw and matching nut.  I drilled the holes at exactly 1/4 inch as well, so the screws do thread a little into the eucaboard when installed (makes everything feel even more stable).  On the top side, I used 1/4 inch sealing washers instead of regular washers...the rubber seals will prevent damage to the upholstery should you guys need/want to adjust the rod.  On the bottom side is the standard nut, and the "foot" of the retainer serves as a washer.

All the rods are over-cut in length by about a half inch so you guys can adjust their profile if/as necessary.  I figured since we all do work on our cars, and these cars are so old, that there might be some variances from car to car.  At any rate, you'll be able to loosen the retainers and slide the dowel rods so that they match the "catches" on your car perfectly.

We're almost there!  The un-upholstered units will be finished next week for sure.  The upholstered units might be the week after that (I want to make sure that the adhesive has completely tacked and cured before painting.  The paint can dilute the adhesive).  Anyway here's some pics!

Cheers,
Nick

Here you can see the under-side of the mounts.  Notice the over-cut for adjustments that I mentioned above.
