I still might need a thing or two. I know I need the rear bolts and nuts that hold the strut onto the a-arm.
tsi_tom
I picked up this engine from a guy named John in Scranton Pennsylvania around the 2003-2004 year. More on the engine later. tsi_tom
2012 -Starting work on the car finally.... Engine bay. Someone wired up some fan toggle switch. You can still see the red wire on the cross member. Exhaust manifold is cracked. Must have severely overheated. A compression test showed low values. I put compressed air into the cylinders. Air can be heard between cylinders two and three and also in the radiator. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Radiator/enginebay.jpg Edited January 24, 2013 by tsi_tom
tsi_tom
Radiator Since the car had a cracked exhaust manifold and a toggle switch for the AC fan I removed the radiator. After all this time there was still something in it. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Radiator/radiator.jpg Contents of the radiator. No wonder it overheated. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Radiator/radiatorcontents.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Radiator/Radiatorcontentsfinger.jpg I then took the radiator to Reiter's Radiator in Emmaus Pennsylvania. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Radiator/ReitersRadiatorShop.jpg The very nice owner said the radiator was very dirty and needed to be rodded. tsi_tom
Since the replacement motor sat for eight years I decided to take of the head and see what the cylinders looked like. In 2004 I sprayed a lot of WD-40 in the spark plug hole. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Before%20the%20machine%20shop/Enginewithouthead.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Before%20the%20machine%20shop/DSC02052.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Before%20the%20machine%20shop/Pistonwithrust3.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Before%20the%20machine%20shop/Pistonwithrust2.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Before%20the%20machine%20shop/Pistonwithrust1.jpg I rubbed one cylinder with scotch brite. tsi_tom
Block is back from the machine shop. I also took the crankshaft to be checked but I don't have pics of the crank. I am going to take a risk with the rust in the cylinders. tsi_tom
Dad was right when he said that the rings could be frozen in an engine that sat for eight years. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Piston%20Cleaning/frozenrings4.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Piston%20Cleaning/frozenrings3.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Piston%20Cleaning/frozenrings2.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Piston%20Cleaning/frozenrings1.jpg I was wondering how to clean the carbon build up on the pistons. Metric-Man said that Simple Green works good. I bought a gallon of Simple Green at Lowes and soaked the pistons overnight. I was amazed at the results. There still was work to be done because not all of the carbon comes off inside the ring grooves. I used Berryman's carb cleaner to soak the piston and then used the old ring to clean the ring grooves. Also I used a bunch of CRC 2+2 to clean the oil passage to the wrist pin. Before cleaning in Simple Green at full strength http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Piston%20Cleaning/twodirtypistons.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Piston%20Cleaning/topofdirtypiston.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Piston%20Cleaning/pistonsoup.jpg After http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Piston%20Cleaning/simplegreenclean.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Piston%20Cleaning/simplegreenclean2.jpg

I used the same color Indiana used on one of his blocks. Duplicolor Cast Iron. This Friday I will pickup the block from Automotive and Industrial. They cleaned it again since I honed it.
