87 and 88/89 Tranny Differences

The 88-89 Trannies are in fact superior to the 87 and earlier model trannies. The 88-89 trannies are equipped with "beefier" internals, such as the synchros and gears. So those of you with 87 and earlier cars who are expecting to push big, big power it would be wise to go with an 88-89 Tranny. You can tell the difference by looking at the pan on the bottom of the tranny. Here is a pic of the underside of an 87:

And here is a pic of the pan of an 88:

You may have to copy and paste those links.

Thanks to Tim C. for the pics.

Here are some more pics of an 88 tranny.  Ok maybe I'm just trying to show off my nice clean trans, but this is a good place to do just that, lol.   Sorry for the poor pic of the internals of the tranny, I need to invest in a nice digital camera.

wait i looked at your pics and that is a manual huh?

anyway, what would be my options to replace an 87 auto tranny?

The only ones I have read of here are to rebuild, replace with manual or get a rolling chassis and dump my engine in there.

which would you recommend or do you have any others?

My '87 tranny is junk too.... Slips like a one of the water-weenies.  Does anybody know if there are any auto trannies that will work besides starquest ones(ex: other chysler/mistu cars?)  I'm also thinking about going manual.  I've been told some old chysler/mitsu pickups had a manual tranny that'll work.

how do i post pix on here?

i am in the proces of swapin the starion guts into a sigma(ozzy cable clutch gearbox)

look identical apart from the cable/hydrolic stuff.

i got a late model sigma box and it has the same 1st/2nd salector fork as the 88-89 gearbox. also has better lookin mainshaft gears etc.. the countershaft gears are not as wide as even the old starion gears 16mm Vs.. old starion gears = 18mm? whats the 88/89 gear width?

its hard to see any diferance in that pic other than the sulectorfork?

would realy love some mesurments!

cheers

Glen k
