Rear Brakes Grabbing/Locking. E brake.

Had a mechanic replace my rear pads. After 1 week or so...I noticed a brake smell after driving it. I touched both rims and they were both warm/semi hot.

After another week...it went away. This lasted 2 weeks and the brakes started grabbing again...When I was driving one day...I tried to pull the ebrake up and down real hard to see if it would help release the grab but it made it worst...the brakes were really grabbing/locking now and then I had to pull over.

The brakes were locked up and the car would not move. I sat there for an hour to let it cool and tried to go again and it released to the normal grab and I got it home.

Can someone tell me what to check for?

Could it be the E brake need adjusting?

Its a 87 starion ESI.

I have the same problem when it's really cold out. Its not locking up my caliper, and have checked to make sure the rotors are not getting hot, so it must just be keeping they cable taunt on mine but not tight enough to actually contact the pad to the disk. It's kind of strange how it only happens when its below freezing, and after about 15mins of driving it will turn off, or if I drive to the store, shut it off for 5 mins, then re-start it the light will be off. Would like to here what the solution, to our problem is, as Ive heard this E-brake issue is pretty common. My adjustment seems to be good, as it will hold the rear at at one click, and tightens and increases in tension to the point of not being able to pull it any further past about 4-5 but, I suppose it def could be my problem as the cold would contract the cable and increase tension. You have to rebuild the calipers or get a reman set from RockAuto. The e-brake is part of the hydraulic system on these cars, meaning it mechanically actuates the brake pads unlike a lot of e-brake systems that use their own set of brake shoes. To be able to do it that way means a complicated stack of belleville washers packed with grease lives under a rubber boot at the bottom of the caliper. Age kills the boot, grease dries out/get contaminated, pad doesn't release.

Danmit, was afraid of that... sounds like ill be doing a rebuild. Looks like a complicated process for such a simple setup. Ill have to read into this a little more.

  • 2 weeks later...

I got some new remanufactured calipers from autozone and installed them. I'm still having the same problem with the rear brakes dragging a little...(both rims are still a little hot) the e brake is adjusted to be more loose so this is not making the brakes drag.

What else can you recommend looking at? Thanks
