Has anyone installed Bills T56 bell housing in a Starion?

I'm trying to find someone that has installed Bill Hinchers bell housing for the 93-97 LT1 T56 narrow block 4g63 in a Starion.

I want to know if the shifter gets moved forward or back from the stock position. How much and how far was the cylinder head from the firewall. Yes I realize that it depends on the motor mounts that are used but it also depends on where the engine sits in the bay and where the shifter sits.

If the engine is close to the firewall and the shifter is pushed way back in the trans tunnel opening then the engine can be moved forward. But if the shifter is at the front of the tunnel opening then it can't be moved because the engine can't be moved further back without modifying the firewall.

Alternatively, does anyone know the distance from the firewall to the middle or the front of the transmission tunnel shifter hole?

Thankx, David.

that was the original problem with the 4G63 in the Starion, guys were pushing the engine back so far in the firewall, they had to chop the car up, so when I built the motor mounts, I placed the engine 3 inches ahead of the firewall to allow the use of the first gen CAS system

well, that was done after I had built the T 56 bellhousings, so I dont have an answer about where the shifter winds up, having said all that I think there are aftermatket shifters available for the T 56

you can look at my build thread.

narrowblock 4g63. Stock Starion motor mounts. 1998 LS1 T-56 (you can find the difference in shaft length). Bill's Bellhousing. MGW aftermarket shifter (http://www.mgwltd.com/camaro_short_throw_shifter.shtml)

I personally needed to move the shifter hole back a tiny bit, but only so that the shifter boot would be centered.

Either way you'll need to make a new tunnel because the transmission won't fit. The LT-1 will probably fit a little better because the bell housing is shorter, but not much.

Also there are two shifter locations on this transmission if anyone is considering making a custom firewall a la hks' 4wd starion and put the shifter up more.
