MY BLACK 89 CONQUEST TSI SHP

Well, I finally took some pictures of my car to share with you guys. I've had my Quest for a while now and basically all I have done to it, its try my best to bring it to its full OEM potential. I have detailed it inside and out. I took everything apart inside, took the original upholstery and cleaned it with shampoo to get rid of the cigarette smell it had (I very much dislike the smell of smoke)....most of it is gone now, but I still detect a bit.

It still has all original paint which is great condition (spider web size scratches here and there.....typical to notice on black cars.....specially after 22 years)...but I know I will bring it back to the way the original owner would have liked to see it.

How did I came hooked on Starquest??? Well, I have always been into cars....specially rare ones. Back in my high school days, right when I turned 17 (a junior in HS) and after saving for about a year, I picked up my very first car....an 86 MERKUR XR4TI.....OH!!! and did I like that car!!! I just loved that twin spoiler on the hatch......that was until some sophomore idiot driving a POS Ford Escort hit my car in the school parking lot, causing damage to the driver's side door and fender. Short after I got the money from the insurance company and was committed to fix my Merkur, but one day I was driving around town, and I saw an 87 driftwood Conquest TSI parked on the side of a driveway with a for sale sign on it.....I stopped, saw it, fell in love with it, immediately put my XR4TI for sale, sold it, took the money and added it to the insurance money stash, ran an got my first QUEST with 44k original miles owned by a 65 year old gentleman since day one. WOW!! was that an upgrade!!! I felt like I was driving an exotic car right off the showroom.....all of a sudden I became one of the popular guys by having one of the coolest cars in high school (and let me tell you I went to a high school full of snobby middle to high class people that drove 5.0 Mustangs of the time, Z28 Camaros, Corvettes, and 3 and 5 series BMWs)

I enjoyed that car for about 8 months, when I regretfully hydroplaned going home from work on a Saturday afternoon; and crashed into a tree going sideways. It was totaled....I was totaled emotionally, and my parents very grateful that I did not hurt my self. The ironic part was that one day before, on Friday; I took my mint Quest to a Goodyear to put new shoes because my father and I agreed the original tires it had on were in very poor condition (cracked and specially the rears were sleek), but unfortunately the store only had the front ones which I immediately mounted, and the rears were ordered to arrive that upcoming Monday........so, as you can imagine the rear tires were the cause of me loosing control of the car...........I lost my beautiful quest due to 2 stupid tires that they did not have in stock at the time needed.........if I could've just waited to drive until monday......... (I will scan pictures of the car before and after and post them for you to see) Needless to say, my father and I got some quotes to repair the car, but all of them were higher than what I had payed for the car originally, so my father told me it was best to sale it to a junkyard.....$500 I got for it...what a sad day that was. (later we realized we could have saved it and and fixed it . It was such a nice car we regretted to have gotten rid of it)

Soon I started to look for another Starquest. I Went to see a couple of them, but after having such a pristine car, my standards were HIGH!.....3 months later I came across a Black 89 Conquest TSI SHP; not as nice as my previous one, but gorgeous! Drove it for about 9 months, but I had to sale it to help me pay for college tuition (sold it to an enthusiast from Jamaica...don't know if he ever brought it back there)......2 or 3 years went by, had my share of other fun cars, when I stumbled onto a white 89 Conquest TSI (original owner, lady driven). There was an urge within me to have another one....went to the bank, got money out, and returned with money in hand and snatched it from the lady. Brought it home. Started to work on it with my father.....it turned out looking so good, 4 months later a random guy from the neighborhood knocked on my front door and offered a good amount of money for it. Turns out he wanted to own one since he was in high school. Within the first week this guy took it to a high performance shop in Miami Fl, and tunned it beyond my dreams (he had the cash to do it....I was still a college student!) He moved from the neighborhood soon after and never heard from him again....I wonder some times if he still owns it. About 6 months later I purchased another white 89 Conquest TSI SHP with checker cloth upholstery. It was repainted, looked nice; but shortly after bringing it home I realized this car was originally auto transmission swapped to manual. The conversion was done very poorly and as the time went by, I felt It was like a cancer...the more I looked, the more things I discovered wrong with it. I got rid of it very quick.

Years went by; I graduated from college, undergraduate school, graduate school and soon Postgraduate school. Got married.....had my share of many fun cars, until I felt the NEED to own another STARQUEST. Got permission from the boss........sorry; from the wife.....and started to look for one online...........found this black 89 Conquest TSI SHP.........reminded me of the one I used to have and all the glory days from high school and part of college......and the rest is history.......the fifth!!!! enjoy!

That's the original leather. It has never been reupholstered. Like I said, when I got the car, I took everything on the inside apart and cleaned with shampoo and special leather cleaner/conditioners; then I touched up the leather with black leather dye to bring out the color....and that's it....To be honest, I never thought It would come out looking this way....HAHAHA! By the way guys.....I have been struggling to find the passenger's seat bolster knob screw round plastic cover that I am still missing. You can notice on picture 11 what I am talking about. A fellow member was nice enough a couple of months ago to give me the driver's side one, which I was very grateful; but every time I open the passenger's door the bear screw is the first thing I see and just drives me crazy.....if you have one laying around, please let me know your price and I will buy it!

And unfortunately the worst for last…this is the way it looked the day it was picked up by the junkyard. I really regret to have sold it……with 47k original miles on the clock, I could have found a good body shop to fix it nicely.
