Junkyard Fun

So I have recently acquired a second job at a local junkyard that i have been a regular with as a type of mechanic to fix vehicles around the yard and to see what i can get going. The simple of it is say if i can get vehicles that they don't know whats up with em then we can diagnose and sell whats good on them. This isn't really a cash job though more of i work for them and i can get some of the things i want out of the yard. The bmw i posted on a different post was a prime example. Soon I may have a small fleet. I already have my name on a late 80s early 90s ram 50 with the 4g64 wideblock and a DOHC head off a newer kia optima that will work on it. I still need to round up a 2.0 crank and a turbo setup. I figure it will be a good build for my quest. But anyway I am going to post some of the vehicles I am toying with for my own amusement. Next vehicle I will be taking over is a what i believe to be a 1963 Toyota Landcruiser which i will explain more in a bit and then a old nissan 280z. The 280z is rough and not really worth fixing. Guys around here were informing me at the local circle track that they have a v6 type class for street type cars and a kid at the yard if prepping a older taurus SHO. And really I can just let him race by himself so I am going to see about getting this old 280z with the big old straight 6 and fuel injection going to give him a run. The z is rusty and roof has been smashed down from either something heavy set on it or someone really was jumping on it. Back window is smashed out but it looks to be all there besides wheels and tires so its worth a look to see if it still runs. It will probably need brakes etc but thats easy. I will get pics of that when i work on it.

OK so back to the 63 Landcruiser. The story with this truck from what my boss heard was back in the early 70s(plates expired in 73) some guy was up here(wisconsin) from arizona with this landcruiser which at the time was in great shape and parked it at this guys house. He ended up leaving at some point and never came back for the landcruiser. So for the last 40+ plus years this thing just sat out in the elements. I did a bit of hot wiring today with a can of gas and some fuel line and had it popping before i decided to stop for the day cause it was late. I am sure its going to start. It has the old old style dash ignition with 3 wires so I tore out a 3 wire set up off a old lawn mower since it is cheaper then rigging up some toggles. Tomarrow I am mounting a tire on the rim and we are going to pull it around. I also plan to pull gas tank off and clean it quick since its easy. On this its right under the passenger seat. So yea if u ride passenger in one of these u litterally are sitting on the gas tank. I never how tough they built these. The body seems to be made out of 1/8 steels. It deffinately isnt sheet metal. A very simple but very functional design. For a engine it has a old straight 6 with a oil bath air cleaner(lol i never worked on a vehicle with one of these before) and a 3 on the tree. It is going to be my little off roader. No title as of yet being it was a abandoned vehicle and the model number says 1963 which i guessed to be the year of it. Tomarrow will be fun. Here is a pic as it sits.

it is a tank I had to do some jimmying to it today. There was a external electric fuel pump that was bad so then for the hell of it i tried the mechanical which was bad. Then i found a fuel pump in the yard i could use but the psi was too much so then i put on a adjustable fuel pressure regulator and that worked. Then I had to take the carb apart for cleaning. Its getting close now. It was getting late. Also I have some fun coming. Its full drums and I was in luck only 2 of the 4 wheels are seized up tight. So big hammer and drum here i come. Also this has 2 master cylinders that I am likely going to have to rebuild. Its deffinately a project lol. I am not sure what this other guy had planned. Behind the front bumper and in front of the grill there is a space about a foot long inbetween the frame and a guy had a sheet of steel which really wasnt a bad thought but....................................LOL it has to be close to a 2" solid piece of steel plate. I am totall not ever gonna try to budge that lol. No wieght reduction here i guess.

I like that Land Cruiser. Cool project.

Its like a striaght up tank and soooo much utility and simply. No sheet metal on it its all steel.

Any old Mercedes? Specifically w123 and w116?

There is only one Mercedes and its a rusty old diesel missing the grill and headlights. Its the old style with vertical headlights

Well its running on its own now. Messed with fuel air mixture screw clean points put in new plugs with fresh gas and she fired up. Then i tried to take radiator hose off and it came off in 3 peices being so crusty lol so i scronged up a hose in the yard that would work and filled it up with antifreeze and she holds temp properly. So far the only thing electrically not working is the wipers. Heater gauges blinkers lights were all working which was surprising. Alternator\generator not sure which u would call it isnt working and I have to take the clutch slave cylinder off and work on it. Freed up both drums without much hassle. And tomarrow i hope to get it to move under its own power. Going to take off slave cylinder and clean in up along with work on cleaning out gas tank then once i have it going i will adress getting it to stop again> One step at a time but its coming along. Land cruiser does run amazing. Once fired there wasnt even a cloud of smoke or a single tick in the motor. Now i had cleaned out the carb and gave it fresh gas and worked on the ignition system but still for something that say this long to run that good i found remarkable. hell even the 3 old bias plys that were on it yet are still holding air.
