Im getting ready to start my 4G63 and auto to 5speed build

This all started about a year ago when my brother bought a 88 TSI with a blown head gasket for $700. He bought it (not knowing anything about these cars) thinking it would be a quick fix. The plus side to the purchase was that the body of the car( except the faded clear coat and the paint coming off of the wing lol) and interior were in MINT CONDITION! There is not a speck of rust anywhere and the interior is all original and looks like it just came off of the show room.

Well after he Failed miserably, I helped him replace the whole engine. The car runs fine, I drove it all weekend in fact!

Well on day my brother couldn't get it running and got sick of is just sitting so he GAVE it to me for FREE! After about 30 minutes of working on it I found out he had 2 spark plug wires crossed and since then it has ran great. He finally asked me how the car was going so i did the noble thing and told him the engine was shot! lol ( I didn't want him taking it back!LOL)

Well here it is, I picked up the 4G63 motor for a great price. All i have to so now is get the Tranny. Im going to go with just a D50 trans for now, because My buddy has a D50 just sitting in his back yard so I'm getting it for next to nothing. The starquest is also a Auto so I'm going to take the challenge of turning it into a 5 speed.

Ill start pulling the motor and trans this week and also taking apart the 4G motor to start rebuilding that!

Well Wish me luck! THE BUILD BEGINS!

Is the 4G63 you got a wide or narrow block? 6 bolt or 7 bolt?

BTW, I heard the D50 transmission isnt so great.

If you have a wide block, the RX7 tranny seems great if you can source all the parts. Can handle 500+ hp and 11,000 rpm. If you have a narrow block, a man named Bill Hincher makes adapters to use Toyota transmissions. Actually, he makes many adapters, and probably even has adapters for wide blocks.

Good news for you; your car that is originally an auto has a larger transmission tunnel than cars that were originally manual. So you can fit larger transmissions without hammering out your transmission tunnel!

Id like a high revving 4G63 in my car when I can afford it...

Well thanks Chris. The 4g motor is out of à 1990 eclipse gsx, which means 6bolt narrow. I know the d50 isnt the best, but im getting it for free. Besides im not building the motor for à lot of HP right now. It is basically going to be à stock 4G63 rebuild. I just want the car to run and look nice so i can take it to some shows next summer. In à year, if everything Goes well with the swap, Ill gét à different tranny , and ill rebuild the top end of my motor...for now i just want it to move :).

That's cool about my transmission tunnel being bigger, I didn't know that, THANKS!

Also Bill's shop is located 2 Miles from my house :)

if you move the motor 2" foward i have a driveshaft already made for the d50 tranny also have a sprung 6 puck clutch disc and the wilwod pull slave your gonna need. give me $150 shipped and its yours. although i dont recomend the d50 gear box mine lasted 800 miles before i broke it.

Hey, getting it running is not a bad start IMO. Did you make sure that the D50 tranny you got is for a narrow block motor? I believe D50s used both narrow blocks and wide blocks.

Personally, if I were you, Id probably ultimately be looking to get Bills adapter for the larger Toyota transmission. Not saying right away, but eventually.

Yeah cobalt, that's what I'm thinking too. IMO I can change the transmission ANY time! I just want to get it going. That two of you guys that have recommended the Toyota tranny. Eventually when I have 350 hp , what tranny in your opinions is the best? I was looking at the rx-7 and the T5 for a while, I'm just not sure what one to get yet. I probably will never drag race it. It will be a fun street car, that I manly will just be taking to shows.

Oh and yes, it's out of a narrow block D50

sure thing Pirana! its been really exciting so far. I sold my Auto Trans this weekend and im meeting the guy tomorrow for him to pick it up.

The goals for this week:

Find a engine hoist

pull the stock motor

start tearing apart the new 4G63 motor

find a shop that will clean/dip the 4g block, internals, head, valves, ect....

Well, the RX7 transmission is for wide-block motors, so you can basically rule out that option. As for the T5, I am not aware of any readily available adapters.

Bill Hincher has been making narrow-block adapters to use Toyota W55/W58s and R154s. The R154 is the better transmission, however, it is larger. If your car started off as a manual, you would have to hammer out your transmission tunnel, but since your car started as an auto, the R154 should fit in your current tunnel. That said, I believe Bills most popular adapter is that for the W55/W58. I have occasionally read that the W55/W58 is a somewhat weak transmission, but I dont think that is an issue if all youre looking to get is 350hp. Bill also makes an adapter to use a T56 6 speed! Though I think those transmissions are pricey.

If you post in the transmission swap section on this site (where Bill Hincher actively posts IIRC), Im sure you will find better answers. Also, you can check out www.projectzerog.com , a site dedicated to using 4G63s in RWD cars. Heres the links if you dont already have them:

Ok update:

Yesterday I dropped off my auto tranny to a guy here on the forum.

Last night I got the starquest motor pulled! so now the car is empty! lol Im going to start disassembling the 4G63 motor this week as well! I hope the internals are in good shape. They guy i bought it from said it was still running before he pulled it, but i got it off of craigslist so you NEVER know! http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab138/socjdqcer/IMAG0561.jpg[/img]http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab138/socjdqcer/IMAG0565.jpghttp://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab138/socjdqcer/IMAG0564.jpgHE GONE!

well things have been going good. I plan on picking up the block, pistons, and rod from the shop. the dipped it and honed my cylinders. I will also be dropping off my head this weekend so they can clean those as well. they are trying to talk me into doing a balance shaft removal kit. I dont know much about it so im doing a bit more research
