  1. So... after EVERYTHING... it runs soooo much better with the MAF unplugged.... Knackered MAF then? Going to give it a careful clean in the meantime. I remember reading on here somewhere that cleaning it is a delicate job. I'll find the thread again and follow it carefully MOT tomorrow.
  2. Thanks, quikconq. I did an ohm check on the injectors. Primary is reading about 5ohms but the secondary isn't reading anything. I'm just going to clean up the terminals and see if I can get any reading at all. http://www.starquest...pic=28043&st=20 I've also been trying to get some error codes out of the ECU. Unfortunately the diagnosis terminal isn't really where it should be and it's had some of the cables snipped from the guy I got the loom and engine from. The black/red wire is still connected up to the ECU at the correct port, but grounding that through an LED isn't creating any flashes etc. Is there some clever guy who knows how I can go about extracting the error codes from the ECU without the usual terminal? Can I wire in to the ECU diagnosis port or do I need to gather other connections? I'll grab a photo in a while! Thanks guys! EDIT: File attached. I've pulled the black/red wire out for ease of 'attaching'
  3. Oh..... well that is interesting!!!! Some more digging to be done. I've just run through and 100% completely spot on dogs bollox accurate done the TPS ISC and timing... it runs soooo close to perfect now. I'm on a photoshoot tomorrow so I'll have a check and dig about on that secondary injector on tuesday Thanks guys! Let me know if there's anything else you can think of. I'll get some pics up asap Chris!
  4. Thanks buddy If I could get the damn thing running smoothly it's going to be an absolute weapon Chris!
  5. Thanks for the reply wrngwae (omg that's tough to type haha) I've just popped out and switched the injectors. It woulnd't start in that configuration so I'm guessing they're the right way round To me it completely sounds like a timing issue too. I'll double/triple/quadruple check the timing in a second but I'm sure I got it right. 10 degrees BTDC....? New coil should be with me on tuesday so maybe that will make a difference. There is something very simple hiding somewhere, i'm sure Chris
  6. Good evening guys! Build is getting very VERY close now. I know it's been a while but you know what these projects are like I had a year that I just had to write off as it just rained none stop over here in England. I've been working on a lot of bits and pieces over the last few months, had the turbo rebuilt (there's time for an upgrade later!) and I adjusted the timing as it was 8 degrees out Not sure how that happened. Hopefully this will work, here's the link to the latest engine running video I've popped up on my Facebook... https://www.facebook.com/chris.frosin/videos/vb.548905764/10153066408405765/?type=2&theater I do, however, need you guys help as I'm stuck. The engine won't rev quickly. I can get it up to 4250 revs slowly, but I can't bury the throttle. It stalls and goes back to idle. If I then keep the throttle open it just stalls as if it's flooded out. I've pulled the fuel filter out to see if it was restricting the flow, that didn't seem to help. I think I've adjusted the TPS correctly, but I'm now pretty stuck without just going out and buying replacement parts for everything.. Has anyone any ideas as to where I can focus some attention and track down this issue? Many thanks!!! SO excited now, it's very very close to being on the road properly Chris!
  7. I'll leave this here Further updates to follow!!
  8. Had a good weekend prepping and primering the car, few photos to show you. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2238/5801561082_16b41582fc.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2505/5800102977_92bf2346db.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5025/5800649736_4675259ec6.jpg A LOT of fun and the first time since I've owned the car that it has all been one colour! Very pleased. Looking at the loom and fuel system now. Ran a hard fuel line under the car and linked up into the boot ready for a fuel swirl pot setup. The loom is a little long tho. If I pop a hole in the passenger side and mount the ECU in that footwell, then I only need 12" to reach the injector assembly... that's about 4' of un-needed loom! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2310/5815398673_eced8447f2.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2655/5815963998_aec735cbdd.jpg I'm thinking of unwrapping the loom, popping the wires out of the plugs, shortening and then reconnecting to the plugs. Not had a thorough look at how the wires push out but I'm hoping they're straight forward http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2301/5816309752_b0f90e3ee7.jpg One thing I DO need to ask, though, is regarding the air filter. There is nowhere near enough room to fit in the whole air box in the engine bay, so was hoping to swap to a simple K&N air filter. Friend kindly donated one, if it needs changing that's no problem but what do I do about the assembly inside the original air box? http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3532/5815960698_6ac723ffc6.jpg Found a little in this post but still not 100% sure. Thanks guys! Wiring loom will be tackled this weekend/next week and the fuel swirl pot setup tomorrow (weather permitting) Chris!
  9. Thank you very much for the help guys! I've downloaded the manual and had a flick through, hopefully I can start at the beginning and just start allocating wires and it'll come together! I'm very much looking at multiport in the not too distant future as well as an engine rebuild, crank grind and maybe either a polished and ported head or a replacement (I seem to remember an EVO head benefitting the engine a lot) At the moment it's very much a 'get on the road' project as there are a lot of people waiting to see the car which I find very flattering and also one of my best friends who inspired me to get the car in the first place sadly passed away a couple of months ago and we're having a memorial award in his memory at a coming car show and I NEED to get the car roadworthy for then. Mid August basically Once that is done, I can continue fiddling I will keep you informed, you've already been very helpful as a forum. Thanks guys! (plus, I have an Aunt living in Boston, making US purchases MUCH more acceptable!!) Chris
  10. Thanks guys!! Here's where it stands at the minute! Starion intercooler kinda mounted, need to trace the i/cooler hoses, then vac pipes, fuel line and the loom... I'm dreading the loom! Plenty in there to go wrong I fear. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5184/5741474728_6e4afd1b70.jpg Tried to label in my head most things on the loom http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2361/5741478682_e8f576d710.jpg Fuel injection assembly I believe. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2431/5741480026_513a39ac24.jpg Haven't got a clue haha! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2196/5740927607_f5daae7ffd.jpg I'm thinking sensors? Rad and fan temp sensors? http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2705/5741482438_15ddb69939.jpg And then last end is obviously ECU. Not sure where the connection off of the coil goes tho? http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3073/5741484884_5bb5e42046.jpg And I'm embarrassed to say I have no idea what this is :/ http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3046/5741485912_36eda5984e.jpg But here's the money shot which has put a smile on my face for the last two days!! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2294/5739762421_b87f6c30ec.jpg New upgrade intercooler will be replacing that when its on the road but at the minute the priority is to get it back driving again! I have a car show in August that it NEEDS to be at. Thanks again guys Chris!!
  11. Good evening guys! Validation came through a couple of days ago and I've been browsing the forum for a while looking at details of engine rebuilds and the like. Thought I'd introduce myself and my project I live in England and had been looking for a Mitsi Galant GTO for years until one turned up a few hours away. Much more favourable than the import I was looking at from New Zealand. Here's the car picked up and towed back a little over 18months ago. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3052/5734014073_d204ba89e1.jpg The plan was simple. Restoration and an updated engine from a Starion. The starquest block is the next generation of the Astron block currently fitted to the Galant so I was hoping it would be a simple swap. Old engine was pulled leaving plenty of space for a starquest engine I was yet to find. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4138/4824669691_afced7b758.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4077/4824682369_2b62fc9b20.jpg Managed to source a 2.6l tubby engine from a friend who is replacing it for a turbo'd V8 Lexus and got it home to see how it all fitted. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5202/5351860025_7901e92e1d.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5014/5515039495_b9a2d1f5ca.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5013/5515631390_0a8365b921.jpg Actually fits in really well but I had to drop the steering box out so the gearbox would clear. Plenty of room once it bolted up. I had to shorten the extension housing of the gearbox as it was a good 4' too long and I didn't want to cut the tunnel. Was a nightmare to strip the extension housing off the gearbox but replacement parts from a Mitsubishi L200 (the pickup, I'm not sure what it is over the pond??) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5019/5641881316_46b177d47a.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5053/5641885970_2055d4e001.jpg Old and new selecter arm... quite a difference in length. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5268/5641318767_706dca0765.jpg New housing is much shorter too. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5302/5641315927_b1fb849843.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk2/MR4G63/box020.jpg Once it all got back together it gave me just enough clearance... Happy! http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5020/5641316915_1b97cbb80f.jpg It's a case of plumbing it all in now. I don't think the starquest intercooler is going to find space infront of the radiator although I'm not sure I can find one that does fit nearly at the moment. Some research is needed! I'm a little daunted by tracing all the vac pipes and electrics but I'm guessing a good 'one at a time' process should see me through to getting this started for the first time! Fuel swirl pot should be plumbed in tomorrow. The deadline to get this running and back on the road is the end of August. One of my best friends sadly passed away a few weeks ago and we're having a memorial award for him at a car show. Once it's on the road, I'll slowly continue the restoration and look at improving the engine too! Thanks for reading guys, if anyone wants to read about the whole project you can find it here on the Retro Rides forum I look forward to getting to know everyone here and hopefully be able to advance the performance of this engine in the coming months. Thanks Chris!
