I want to put some subs in my SQ.  The problem is the last time I built a system was 10 years ago.  Subwoofer tech has changed since then.  The last system I built was a dual 12 solo baric setup in a ported box.  It worked well but no room for that in a SQ without mods.  I was thinking of a dual 8" solo baric setup in a ported box but that box may be a little big.  Ideally I would like to only use the front half of the trunk for a sub box.

Are there better speakers than kicker solo barics in the same price range now?  Would say x2 round 8s with 1" excursion be louder than the kickers?  I have a single 8" kicker left over from my old truck that's why I'm considering those speakers.

I recently picked up a JL 500/1 slash series V1 to power the subs.  That's the same amp I powered my dual 12 setup with.  It was loud even though the subs were rated for 1200 watts.

What are your thoughts?  What did you do to add bass in your SQ?

Memphis is good quality stuff at a reasonable price, ive used them a lot though the years,  also, you might want to consider a single 10in sub. i have a single 10 in my quest and it does well..

also, if you dont use the spare tire in the sub floor of your quest, you could mold the box there, save a lot of room.

So after some research I decided to go with Savard 8" subs.  They are an old company that was big in the 80s and 90s.  8" subs in the past were wimpy but new tech seems to have changed that.  I'll be ordering some of these soon and building a ported box for them.  The box will only need to be about 1.2 cubic feet so it will be nice and small.  And hopefully decently loud.

I'm still deciding if I'm going to do 2 subs or 3.  Got to design the box to find out if there is enough room.

Never heard of Savard.  I did like my JL 10 inch sub.

Kicker dual voice coils. Kenwood amps pack more of a punch than anything out there. Just a little more expensive. Jvc decks seem to hold up

Left that teeth-rattlin bass stuff behind years ago. Target:  clear, tone balanced, with 'weight' on the low end
I like the challenge of achieveing that without the conventional sub-box... like some oem

Even if you have to 'mold' an enclosure into the sides of the cargo area for example. Like SUVs do.
Once you figure out the volume, pick a driver. Got decent bass form a 6" driver(slot ported)

I try to use available compartment spaces, instead of a big ol 'coffin' takin up space. Allloootttt more effort tho.
All my cars (AE86, 2000 escort wagon & 240sx) are all hatches with cargo spaces that get used, so a box is not an option

I listen to rock and metal..nothing like that bass drum kick and hearing the bass guitar. Hate twangy high pitched ear bleed trebel systems.

I hear what you are saying and I agree to some extent.  I put off doing subs in a SQ because storage space is so limited.  I do want better sound but I don't want windows breaking bass.  That's why I'm going for a setup that requires the smallest box possible while giving good sound.  And it will be setup so removing the box will be easy if necessary.

What I really wanted to do would be expensive.  The sides of the rear seat connect directly to the rear fenders.  I wanted to do a custom fiberglass boxes extending into the rear fenders on both sides.  Then have the subs mount flush in the middle of the padded rear seat sides.  It would be a permanent, non removable install.  There is the room for that but custom boxes plus re-upholstery would not be cheap.

I like the idea of using  space where your spare tire sits. Problem is l like having my spare just in case. You could fit pretty good size woofer in that spot though.

WHAT?   Only seeing 1000 watts.....it's not bad....lol.  The looks I get when somebody peeks in is priceless.  Actually sounds phenominal until you push it hard enough to get excursion noise.....but by that point you're killing braincells and going sterile.

But in all seriousness....with all the thinline, small air volume technology out there now, you can put tremendous bass anywhere.  Working on dual ported 12's under the rear seat of my truck that still have over 2" excursion....it's crazy compared to my high school years (paper cone Cerwin Vega's requiring like 3 cu ft per 12" sub).  Would have called BS until I worked with some JL TW's recently
