TD06SL2

Recommended Posts

Ok

After lots of meassuring and analizing diameters and measuring I concluded that the best TD05 upgrade is the TD06SL2.

I wanted to bring the best out of the turbo with out changing the downpipe, water hoses,manifold,T3 plate,etc,etc,etc....and keep the factory look. I finally found the right people that got my idea and made it possible.

I also thought about the fact that the exhaust manifold needs to be ported to flow more volume through it and match port the manifold with turbo inlet and outlet and custom cut/port to fit the TD06SL2. Also ported just a bit of the wastegate.

At the end it will be a 18G/TD06SL2

Here are some pictures...

Good to see someone who understands the turbine is an important part of the performance. Can you share more info as to how to came to choose this particular wheel? Its something I'll be doing soon to my flatty.

Little delay....waiting on my Turbo Rebuilt Kit.

My TD05H/19C had a little play so I might aswell put new thrust bearings and seals before i put it back togheter plus i have to balance the new TD06SL2 with the 18G anyways....

DEEP BREATH.........

  • 2 weeks later...

Looks like my turbo.

What's the difference between a TD06SL2 and a TD06h?

EDIT: From what I have found, a TD06SL2 is 11 blade and a TD06h is 12 blade. The 11 blade is lighter weight, and will spool faster. So I guess I am running a TD06SL2-20g. And my car spools HARD fast, with this new turbo on it.

Ok, Had my new HYBRID 18G-TD06SL2 balance yesterday after noon with NEW PERFORMANCE REBUILT KIT and finally just finish putting everything together last nite at 12:30am

Went over every single bolt twice and everything is tight!

Hope to start the car tonite(doubt it, family b-day) but, definately tomorrow.

just need to add coolant and replace the little water hose that goes from the thermostat housing to the turbo line.

Almost there....

I also went ahead last night and spray VHT ceramic coating (flat black) on all the porting jobs and another coat on the turbine housing.

looks like nothing ever happend here

worked very good on my manifold/turbine housing when I did it awhile back

I forgot to take a picture of the coating since my hands were dirty.....

I always was in doubt as to why the turbo will spool and then "felt" like it was not pulling hard. (Top End in other words)

and always doubt the combination of a 16G/18G/19C/20G wheels with the TD05 was not a good idea.

Theres was something missing....PLUS I wanted to keep the factory look.

I started analizing the size of the TB, manifold, and turbine housing and felt like theirs a choke on the car on purpose and is the exhaust side (mainly) because the TB is only 46mm and the exhaust manifold is 43mm! That is a BIG restriction and wonder why headers will help a lot with the STARION but then again will not have enough Horse power to keep pulling.

I read about TD06 wheels on the TD05 housing and did not think it was going to get the most out of it and creating more heat in such a small turbine housing so i came across the TD06SL2 and was actually the same size as the heat shield from the TD05(see above picture) and gasket from the turbine housing to the down pipe (3 bolts)and thought that would be a the answer to solve this restrictive issue.

As i was also browsing around my corvette parts I also notice how big the TB are 80-90mm and i know is for 2 cylinder heads and the OEM manifold was 60mm for each cylinder of course

Severe Thunder storm so i will continue in pieces before my computer shuts down.....

actually after i notice the 60mm manifold my initial idea was to port everything 60mm (2.4")but the turbine inlet housing was not thick enough to handle 60mm so i went and measure the size of the 3 bolt gasket to the downpipe and that measure 57mm wich was the same size as the TD06 turbine housing outlet and said....This is it. 57mm

So i went and got everythin together and decided to go with 57MM

The porting on the manifold was flawless 57MM

the turbine housing inlet was open up in a CONE (V) desing since i could not open up straight 57mm but match 57mm with the manifold.

The turbine outlet was nicely trim to 57mm and the inner part of the turbine housing where the blades are very close to the round angle was a little tricky to do since it was not a stright through 57mm thing you know....so 57mm was done from the outlet in to the turbine center right before the turbine wheel sit and then it was given the angle of the blades.

I think is better to explain in person than by writing it

Anyways....I will test the car up with stock boost and install my AEM wideband and AEM boost control/gauge and go from there to see wher are the air/fuel ratio with stock boost.

Next project will be to match the TB and make it 57mm with 2 Secondary Injectors or maybe 2 1600cc injectors and a Micro-Tech System

Stay tune for update of the personal experience and feeling with my mathematical idea :D

YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Car feels a lot more stronger and feels and pulls HARD!

I am VERY HAPPY with how it feels and knowing the potential it has with more boost is just priceless.

I am just testing factory 10 PSi even though the turbo is beging for more boost and the reason is some what slow to respond at 10 PSi but, its ok!

I am happy yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

GET OUT MY WAY!

A local machine shop and this hole set up with the TD06SL2, rebuilt kit,18G wheel and the porting set me back a few hundred bucks but, well worth it since I dont have to BUY or change my down pipe,BUY or change my water lines, BUY or change my intake hose or get a adapter plate, etc, etc, etc .....to keep the factory look.

The entire Set up you mean?

Just the porting? The turbo and manifold porting?

Let me know if you or anyone need a quote for a job like this.

PM me

Chances of porting a TD05 housing big enough?
