Greetings all,

I'm very green here and wanted to tell my story.

I'm a Mitsibushi fan boy for a long time aswell as a Nissan guy, they build engines and cars that are ment to last.

My brother and me and a small club (We aRe Wired) are doing a sort of rally, rallycross, dirt racing, here we call it sandcross. (Dutch site: http://www.cross.wrw.be )

Mostly we do bangers, so desctruction derby, sometimes lemon racing, like 4 hour derby's without crashing !

- I need always to tell people to restoration - rebuilding sites, that we love old cars and that we NEVER EVER would wreck up a car that can be rescued.

We mostly take cars from the junkyard, that are hours or even minutes away to end up in there shredder, so we save allot of parts and cars like this !

To us (me and my brother) it's a hobby to make fun with the least money spend on cars as possible.

So we buy old rusty cars, strip all the parts, sell'm for the least money possible, get our money back, wreck it up and get it back to the junkyard.

It's a good way to bury those cars and have the most out of'm, parts wise. It's a worthy way of going imho

Now why am I here on the quest of stars ?

BTW: Starions are here in Europe pretty rare !

Myself bumped up 3 Starions 2.0l turbo 1984, 1985, 1986, flatbody's.

I only bought the '84 and '86, they are wayyy beyond repair or even salvaging for road use. The '85 was imo rebuildable, so we left it behind !

So I wanted to rebuild them for rally cross, (dirt racing) they are in no way ment to be used as banger or destruction car, just racing for years to come, that's why Starion is build !

In our club there are a couple of Toyota MR cars, mid engine RWD monsters that just win everything !

Now the icon Starion is needed to teach those guy's a lesson !

Turbo with lot's of horsepower and RWD is what we need.

I'll post here the pics of those sad little cars, that need louuuuds of work to make them competitive, but I'm willing to take a route just to prove Toyota that a Mitsibushi can handle those pesky MR ! :P

I'm brand new into turbo and all this Starion madness, but on this forum I've learned so much already and hope to get some support to make this fairy tale happen.

This is the first one, red one, originally it was white, but now bad red painting ...

Saving him from the junkyard:

http://cross.wrw.be/private/330.jpg

Believe you me, the bumper is't forced off, it just dropped of his own weight through rust hehe

The shape that you see is, just paint, no iron no more :)

http://cross.wrw.be/private/333.jpg

Yes on the floor, you see 10cm thick rat droppings <_<

The glove compartement was a housing of rats, man it's terrible to work at this car, death animals all around, feathers, skeletons and s*** all over the place !

http://cross.wrw.be/private/334.jpg

Some spare parts ECI, timing and a ford ECU :)

Never a good sign !

http://cross.wrw.be/private/336.jpg

The engine compartment, I just hope that this can be turned around to a horsepower high RPM monster for the least money possible !

http://cross.wrw.be/private/335.jpg

Broken turbo exhaust housing

http://cross.wrw.be/private/WP_000358.jpg

http://cross.wrw.be/private/WP_000362.jpg

The shaft of the turbine is gone aswell, need to rebuild this before there is even a chance of using this turbo !

Remember this is already cleaned as hell lol, it was incredible ...

http://cross.wrw.be/private/WP_000366.jpg

At least the turbines aren't shipped in any form, just cleaning and reusable if not upgrading ...

http://cross.wrw.be/private/WP_000371.jpg

Parts maybe usefull for Starion lovers, although they are in very bad condition !

http://cross.wrw.be/private/WP_000378.jpg

Finally a clean part .... NOT, rats or squirrels has lived in here, nuts and features all over :/

I dont know what you paid for it,but the hood and tailights are probably worth 2-3 times as much as you paid for the car. FYI I have paid $500+ US for an 83 hood and I paid around $350 US for a set of those tails shipped here. Nice find, now take those parts off and keep them for an enthusiast or a street driven car so they dont get ruined in a race car. You could probably sell them on here and help fund your build.

how about that hood on the red one?

You know I'm from Europe, Belgium. The shipping costs would be like 100$ I guess, we should agree on a reasonable price for you and for me, including the shipping?

But I first need to check for ya if rust isn't to bad. After the weekend, allthough I didn't notice much of rust on the hood itself ...

tail lights?

Same here, you know I'm from Europe ... ?

Lemme check first if the tails aren't chipped or cracked! After the weekend

Thanks for the info, I know a bit of the pricing of some parts, but didn't really realized that it would go for such amounts !

That can let my build for sure take a lift ;)

I have paid them allot though ! If I could sell that hood and lights, for you advised price, I would be there, though.

Like said Starion is very very rare here in our region, so I was willing to pay louds for a wreck, firstly I didn't wanted them to get shredded and secondly I knew that these cars have loads of HP and are pretty strong ...

I will for sure keep all parts aside for the enthusiasts, and remake hoods etc. from sheet metal

Would love to see some pics of your other cars.

Lol yea vultures, thats the least you can say :D I don't mind, most parts will be sold anyway, the problem are the shipping costs. And thanks, will post more pics of my white '86 soonish

i may be interested in the wire connectors for the factory radio if i can find out if they are the same as the U.S connectors

I will strip the car and as soon I'm done will post pics of the connectors for ya...BTW, isnt the interiour rare? Seats and sidepanels, its in kinda nice condition. Black and red.

Sad to say I paid more for my tails=P lol BUT THEY ARE PERFECT. End thread jacking

Welcome and I look forward to seeing the progression. Tear up those MR2's. Are they the AW11's?

My buddy has one and it was decently quick for what it was=D

Love the fact that you're saving them. If they have some use, it better to use em for whatever it is, than scrapping it. Hows the drivers side door panel? Mine has some rips on it. Let me know. I don't mind the shipping issue

hehe.......im a vulture too :) jk

Welcome to SQC

The inside is still untouched, am first trying to get this thing started, just for the sake of knowing that the ECU, ignition and ECI is still useable.

But we can't get a spark in any way. Aswell as the compression is to me, completly gone, need to go borrow a compression meter.

To us the coil is good, as it gives power and it heats up a little bit, the ignition timings are looking good and the ECU is opened up and nothing smells or looks burned and it looks like new inside the box.

"Any idea's, tips how I can test Starion electric system fast and safe ?"

After it gives a sign of life I will take all parts pictured and set'm for sale.

Yes it are the old models, they are really fast, they are well balanced cars for dirt racing !

They can even compete with these beasts, with Hayabusha engines, although on these MR's are a set of springs that cost like 1500$ a piece and engine management that's tuned to it's limits, but not turbo charged :P !

Myself am hoping that pure raw Horsepowers can deal with this, although we are saving up for some good springs, Billstein or Pro-flex or something of that order ... But it's hard to find for Starion, kit's that set car up instead of lowering :)

Now THAT looks like fun!

Not only looks fun, :D it really is louds of fun.

First the mechanics, learning, then the racing close battles is the reward you get.

Allthough, we have louds of work ahead, five months to go, till first race of the season ^^

First parts taken off and cleaned ! Dishwashers are the bomb :)

They are crisp clear, some scrubbing scratches if you look really closely from washing the car I guess.

The glue is gone, and the mirrors inside will be resprayed so they reflect the light again they are dull/mat.

Won't glue them shut just yet as, dunno if someone rather have an open lens to spray it little bit black-ish inside.

Got:

- 2 right sides, in mint condition imho.

- 1 left side in crisp condition

- 1 left side, with a hole in the lens :(

I dunno though about shipping costs, so I will figure this out and decide if I get good prices for them to ship them overseas, at my place they are worth a buck, but they are worth allot more in the U.S.

And wanna first of all win my money back from they car itself and would love to fund with some money a new brain for the cross car ^_^

Nice backside !! Crisp clean.

And yes a dishwaser is the least labor intesive way to clean such stuff imo ;)

I put everything in it that fits hehe

Not to hot so it doesnt deform plastics, but it's awesome how clean it comes out, without any chance of rubbing scratches to surfaces ...

Hmm...good to kncroscratches out, you can wetsand with 2000 grit and then polish with plastic compound. That's what I have to do. And thanks=P There is broken paint under my spoiler causing it to deform it though=( Gotta take that off and fix any problems when I do the bodywork.

Bought myself another one '85, not a wreck and not ment to be used for dirt cross ...

Maybe I will put him on the road, but allot of costs to the engine and still a whole lot of body work ...

The price was kinda right, that's why and it's a intercooler with & spare turbo, so

Pics will follow ;)

Oo yeah question,

Will this engine '85 be the same underblock as an '83 ?

And can I just swap the underblock, cilinder, no pistons and no inner pieces ?

The cylinders are completly ruined in the '85, I think it has way deeper scratches then repairing it I think ...

Can't see the scratch very well, but it's on the right side just above the piston, I think deeper by feeling then oversize boring :(

Heya'z

Anybody has any idea of what this dirt could be... (it locks up the engine completly !)

This we found when we opened it up lol

My description of it, it's like crystallized stuff, when you touch it with a screwdriver or whatever, it cracks like thin ice.

The brown looks like rust but it isn't, just has the color of it.

The yellow-ish is as-well soft and my brother say's it smalls like oranges lol.

Maybe once it was honey and a hive nested in the cylinders but it was still all closed up for many years ...

I can't believe it, as the exhaust holes aswell are filled with this stuff, so bee's can't pass there ...

(Second piston is just drained cool water)

I think a rebuild and bore are in order.

Yeah it looks very nasty !

To overhaul the engine and be used in racing I wish I could get a list of stuff I need to do, I have an idea but it would be very helpful to have other opinions ...

It needs to give full throttle for about 10-12 minutes. 3 times a day, with 2-3 hours in between, so cooling down is no problem imo

Mostly it's just in a ellipse form of sand circuits.

So it needs "Full power - Brake hard, Full power - Brake", and so on, like 10 laps, mostly it's only like first gear and second gear, once in a while on a bigger circuit it's third gear for a split second.

The most important is: as CHEAP AS POSSIBLE !, It's a hobby and just for fun, nothing to earn high price money.

  • The cost I'm willing or have to make for sure, overboring, oversized race pistons and a race clutch and a lighter flywheel.

  • I consider a T3-T4 hybrid turbo and a Emerald K6 Engine Management, that's as far as I go with high costs, this after the engine is running very good.
  • And if I can find a 16V head and a better inlet manifold cheaply that can be done aswell later on, prolly next race season.

All help appreciated !

I have an emerald k6 now lol. Very good so far. I just need a proper tune at the Dyno. But for you, since it's full throttle, you just need to do a few quick runs and set it up to what feels most effective.

Also, I recommend forged pistons so you can boost higher. Don't go for hyper pistons. Aside that, If you have welding experience, I would fabricate my own intake. I'll post a pic of mine in a bit. Oh and try to get your hands on a non jet valve head. They're tougher and you can get a port and polish kit on jegs. Port out those suckers. Or you can spend $1500 and buy that fully worked head on the parts for sale section. It's worth it, but hey, it's your call.
