Does anyone know why this is happening, and what kind of a can of worms I'd be opening up by trying to address this? It looks like there is rust inside.

There probably is. The wing itself is a urethane. The trunk lid is metal. It looks like the trunk lid is rusting underneath and lifting the wing.

The urethane is bonded to a metal skeleton.  When it rusts it pulls away from the frame work.  Water gets under the wing from the back hatch and when it sits there is soaks it up.  I have seen it more common on the side “wings”

I guess that is a good reason to take them off once every 5 years and clean it all up under there.

Yeah... that sounds good. Until you try to take it off. :D

Thanks guys. The back panel on the hatch, below the spoiler, appears to be plastic. A magnet does not stick to it. So, it seems like the metal "skeleton" of the spoiler must be what's rusting.

I haven't looked at the service manual or searched the forum yet, but has anyone removed the rear spoiler before, and if so, got any tips to share?

You’ll have to shim it as you go, cutting the double sided tape that holds it on. There is an Allen cap bolt in each corner also. I had to cut down an Allen wrench to get it in there

Thanks. I have a lead on a good one locally. For anyone else with the same problem (and for my own reference for when I finally get around to doing this job), I found two older forum posts on removing the spoiler:
