Thanks again to Burton for the hard work, great price, and delivery.... hope you can make it again this fall, I'll just have to find something else for you to deliver. ;)

Glad I live in NM and never really have to worry about rust.

The work looks good.

I hear ya man, I have 2 other Sq's that are from my neck of the woods and neither of them have any rust at all, the fiji however, came from Penn, but its an 89 SHP so I figure its worth it.

Toadie, no the hardest part was sanding it all well enough to make sure the paint would stick and getting it coated evenly enough for it all to wrinkle the same. If you use this stuff make sure you use heat lamps to help it wrinkle as it starts to set up.

V-Brad, It was a package deal with the rear bumper, check with Burton on pricing, if he even has time to mess with that stuff now.

As for weight savings, maybe a pound and a half. Its alot of work for that lil bit of weight, but I was more interested in keeping the air moving in the front and out of the back vents on the hood. We'll see if it helps or not.

I'll post up some more as the work progresses when my job and free time allows.

i think you could hole-saw some bigger holes in the hood frame.

I remember seeing an old Option video from japan, and the guy just removed the entire frame from the hood. lol it was just a flimsy piece of sheet metal hahah.

I could have, and I could put alot more smaller holes in it also, down the sides of the hood frame for instance, but weight savings werent my primary goal with this.

I am using fabricators/electrician style hole saws also called rota-broaches in my industry. Most folks dont know the term when I use it. The standard hole saw leaves a ragged hole often mishapen, because the arbor is a 3/16 drill bit and it walks as the saw is cutting, and if you look closely at one it is just a piece of saw that has been wrapped around a jig and welded together, making it not a true round. It can also catch and warp thinner metals when its cutting through. I wasnt gonna risk my 83 hood for that. The rotabroach style hole saws are machined and perfectly round and use a pin style arbor. You just lay out your holes by deciding size and distance apart and drill an 1/8 inch hole where you want them and go to town with the rotabroach. They cut very cleanly and can be deburred easily.

The hood already had some oil canning going on when I got it due to the hood liner being seperated from the hood. I had to repair that before I could do much of anything else. We used to send out all of the oem style sheetmetal, (hood, roofs, decklids) that we use on our race cars, to be acid dipped. That made them abot 26 guage when we got them back, very thin and prone to warping/oil canning. However, now they all get checked by nascar for the correct thickness.

I should be able to spend some good hours in the shop tomorrow and hopefully get the right side done or close to done. more pics and updates to come, thanks for all of your comments, thoughts, and suggestions.

The patch panels were bought off of some different donor cars from this site. Working in my industry just gives me the access to the equipment to help fit them better.

well I havent updated this because I havent had much time to work on it, and I wanted to get a decent welder before I continued the progress. So here are some updated pics since I got a better welder it was time to get back to work.

I got the left side lower front welded on and the seam sealed up.

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/fiji/bW1jMS9EQ0lNL0NBTUVSQS9TU1BYMDAwOS5qcGc.jpg

then after some bodywork and primer

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/fiji/bW1jMS9EQ0lNL0NBTUVSQS9TU1BYMDAxNy5qcGc.jpg

same as above door jamb view

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/fiji/bW1jMS9EQ0lNL0NBTUVSQS9TU1BYMDAxOC5qcGc.jpg

and the rear, the whole lower wheel well area and lower inner 1/4 panel had to be redone

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/fiji/bW1jMS9EQ0lNL0NBTUVSQS9TU1BYMDAyMi5qcGc.jpg

more of the same

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/fiji/bW1jMS9EQ0lNL0NBTUVSQS9TU1BYMDAyMC5qcGc.jpg

after some rust proofing on the inside, ready for the outer to go on

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/fiji/bW1jMS9EQ0lNL0NBTUVSQS9TU1BYMDAxOS5qcGc.jpg

after the outer is on before body work

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/fiji/bW1jMS9EQ0lNL0NBTUVSQS9TU1BYMDAyMy5qcGc.jpg

and the total view, almost done with this side and getting ready to do it all again on the left side.

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt93/BC_99/fiji/bW1jMS9EQ0lNL0NBTUVSQS9TU1BYMDAyNC5qcGc.jpg

Update:

Well, I have most of the right rear 1/4 panel finished. Im looking for a piece of equipment I need to make the last patch panel to finish it up. Im also waiting on Sotty to cut out some good rust free NV left rear 1/4 panel patches for me before I get started on that side. So, in the meantime, I am working on a few projects

1 is the 83 tail lense reproduction project. I have bought every spare set of 83 tails I can get my hands on and hopefully will be starting to make molds to reproduce 83 lenses in the near future

2 is odds and ends on the fiji, I bought a set of Quest tails from Burton that had tinted lenses, but needed taken apart and cleaned up and re-sealed. Here are some pics of them finished up and the rear license plate center molding all cleaned, sanded, and repainted.

They look way darker than they actually are. If you hold them up and look trough them from the back you can see right through. I know they will light up alot better now that they've been disassembled, repainted silver on the inside and all 3 lenses thoroughly cleaned and polished. Im hoping that Motocam will finish up his led taillights soon and start offering a package to convert stock tails to led.
